dvx100B: Noise when in auto focus

I just bought a DVX100B four days ago and I've noticed that there is a slight metallic purr--for a lack of a better way of describing it--when I'm shooting autofocus in 60i. When the room is quiet, I can hear this noise through the headphones. This whir or purr is also recorded onto the tape. So when I play it back on FCP, the purr is there and it stops when autofocus stops hunting. You can really hear this noise if you're using the on-camera mic; if you use a secondary mic and mount it on the side of the camera, and not on top, and if you cancel the on-camera mic, the purr or whir will abate somewhat.

This noise does not come up when shooting in 24p or 30.

My question is this normal and has anyone else experienced this issue? When I'm doing an interview in a quiet room, I can hear this purr when the subject stops talking and autofocus continues to hunt.

Any solution to this? Is this a defect in the camera?

Thank you for your help and insight.

When I'm doing an interview in a quiet room, I can hear this purr when the subject stops talking and autofocus continues to hunt.

Which begs the question, why is it on at all in this situation? Except in some run and gun situations, everything (white balance, focus, iris) should be in manual (unless you want your footage to scream "Amateur!".

hello

I have the same camera as you and I have to say that the noise normally goes away when you use an external microphone on the camera (you don't hear it once it is recorded)...

I never use the internal microphone because then you hear the motor of the zoom indeed and the ring of the focus also

what kind of microphone are you using???

cheers
