i have three questions... 1. when is it necessary to use the shade that the dvx100 comes with. 2. is there any situation that i definately should take it off. 3. am i crazy for even asking these questions and should just leave it alone and never think about taking it off.

I know I take off my sunshade if I want light to hit the lense like Im doing a pan and want a solar flare acrosst the pan.

I take off the shade if i am doing really close shot of something like a mobile screen. else the mobile will be in shadow.

The lens shade on any zoom lens is only effective at the widest focal length of that lens. You want to have the lens shade on when working at the widest angle of the lens, but as soon as you zoom in, even a little, the lens shade is useless.

This is why a matte box is useless unless you use the french flag and side flags that are available for it. (Unless you're just using the matte box as a filter holder.)

So, to answer your question, you don't need to take it off, but it really doesn't do much.
