DVX100B basic audio levels question

When adjusting levels, where should the peak be? I usually set it so peak is when the bars just start turning red.

Problem is that when I start editing, the audio levels are low. Waveforms are there, but tiny, and 5-15db gain is needed to get the levels normal.

What am I doing wrong?

It's the same whether using phantom lav, shotgun, wireless lav mics. Am I recording with levels too low? I always thought going into the red was bad?

set tone at -12. they are the blobs on the metering bars right before the red. then do what oleg said

wrong set up tone setting for dialog , the usial dinamic range of dialog is more then 12 db

Oleg, please share with us, what is your preferred tone level for dialog?

i mean 99% of what we are all talking about in here is dialog/sound for picture etc.

correct me if i am wrong(again) but the main thing is to let post know where you have set your reference tone.

Whatever the dialog levels in the final product are, it is better to record everything as hot as possible (without clipping, of course) and lower the levels in post if needed. That takes the hiss down. Record too low and you bring the hiss up also.
