DVX100B any ideas??

Hello folks

Well this my first post and was just wondering if anyone knows/thinks a new DVX will be introduced. I very much like the idea of the HVX200 but the price of the P2 cards is really putting me off.

Why? Well, my main areas of work are wedding vids and now corporate video. I have to say that I really cant see clients asking for HD productions for some time to come. That will only happen when Blueray or HD-DVD (or whatever it's called cant quite remember) become the norm. And that's a whole other topic altoghether.

I would love Panasonic to release a DVX with true 16:9 and an improvement on the 10x lense (not quality just zoom length). Here's the reason. I bought an ana adaptor for the DVX which immediately strips it of about 20% of it's zoom range effectively making it a 8x zoom which is something of a joke for wedding stuff except as a fixed cam. So, i bought an XL2 for its 16:9 mode. It's pretty poor compared to the DVX in terms of low light and general picture quality in low light conditions. I have to desaturate the DVX footage as well to match the XL2 as the DVX footage is much richer and generally more pleasing to the eye

I really hope that Pana will take a look at the needs of the event videographer. If they could release a DVX with a greater zoom length and the 16:9, the XL2 would be history in this industry. I do love the DVX and when I'm shooting in 4:3 it becomes my main cam.

OK, rant over. Does anyone reckon a DVX100B could be on the way?

There is word of a DVX100b, however, not much is known about it. You could however get the HVX200 and just shoot in DV for now. It will have true 16x9 and a greater zoom range. When P2 prices come down, then you could even use the same camera to shoot HD.
 
A DVX100B is on its way. That much has already been confirmed. However, I sincerely doubt it will have any changes to the lens or to the chips. The only change we know of, for sure, is that it will employ a new environmental-friendly manufacturing process that eliminates lead.

There may be other changes as well, who knows -- but if they are, I'd guess that they'd be menu/software based, and almost certainly not hardware-based. But, hey, I've been wrong before.

Having said that, are you sure you wouldn't want an HVX anyway? It's basically exactly what you're asking for: a DVX with 16:9 native chips and a longer zoom range. You could use it in that configuration and never even use a P2 card or hard disk recorder or anything else like that -- just use it as an improved 16:9 DVX. Then, later, if you decide you want to take advantage of its high-def capabilities you could always get a P2 card or plug in the firewire and capture high-def as well...
 
At the NAB Panasonic DVXuser event, I asked Jan was the DVX-100 end of life & she replied that the camera had quite a bit of life left in it.
 
I too am wishing for a new DVX 100B with native 16X9. Seems they arleady have access to the chip since it is going into the 200. It would make a great camera even greater. Barry is right that the 200 has what we are looking for and I'd love to have one, but it's not out yet, we haven't seen any footage and it is going to cost almost double the price (the DVX is about $3,100 right now after rebate).

I'm hoping they do make the 100 B 16X9 native and I'm waiting untill July 30th (the day before the $300 rebate expires) for any announcement before I buy my DVX 100a.
 
Be careful what you wish for. TO do True 16x9 on the DVX and stay 1/3" chip is another case of packing on the extra pixels. You may end up with higher resolution and take a hit in light sensitivity. I want one too.....mainly because my XL2 does hit a road block when I have to do some low light events. The DVX handles these much better. BUt if the DVX100B (theoretically) packed more pixels into a 16x9 area of the CDD that is smaller than the 1/3 chip in whole to achieve native 16x9, we may see a loss of light sensitivity and latitude. Again...Pana may have a way to overcome this......who knows. I am scared to death of the HVX for this reason. I am praying that with all of these great new features they really nail the low light and the higher pixel count. OR just start making bigger CCDS!!!!

I would be happy if Panasonic would make the audio-gain buttons bigger... They are same size on HVX200. Great idea, but they are TO small...
 
If the wanted to do a 100B change that would be pretty simple, just add a menu option to underscan the LCD.
