So i own a panasonic dvx100b and letus35 adapter and i heard about house's season finale being filmed on the canon 5d II. Aside from the 5d being HD what other big differences does the 5d have over the dvx+35mm adapter rig?

Basically I want to know if i should sell my dvx+letus and buy my friends 5d that he is selling.

i'd like to hear any imput you guys have about the subject.

You can begin to read this thread:

Personally I'm one of the guys who stand by 35mm adapters.

Basically I think that DSLRs have many factors that run against them (all very well covered around the www being the above thread one good example).

Besides that I think that DSLRs can give uou shallow DOF, and that's it! Film look derives not only from that, but MAINLY from the factor that it's a much more organic look with a much better contrast ratio. Even if video cameras can't give you film contrast ratio, the adapters emulate it very well by somewhat "softening" your image creating that organic look that resembles film. That's why many mates state that they're going to use adapters with the upcoming RED Scarlet and some other cameras.

DSLRs have the same "hard" edged image as many prosumer cameras, just more shalloe DOF because of the upsized sensors.

If you're asking me, I would never trade your setup for any of the DSLRs in the market today. But someone might come that thinks otherwise.

Your pick!

Man, that's a tough one. If it was the HVX, no question you should keep your setup.

To me, the first thing that really makes the case for the 5D is low light. That DVX with adapter...I mean...lowlight's just BRUTAL.

If you're shooting in controlled, light-blasted situations, your set-up is still sufficient (and I'm assuming you're talking about narrative stuff, right? Not weddings, etc?).

Another thing to think about is the actual presence of a rig on the set vs a DSLR in your hand. Big rigs make a difference to cast and crew. It's just a fact.

Like everything in investing, I think you have to look at what's going to stand the test of time (what's going to still be viable as you purchase other equipment, etc). Realistically the DVX is not going to be compatible with any other prosumer setup, which means you're going to end up selling it later, which means less and less and less money as time goes on. The Mark 5D II, however, is compatible with Reds, EX1s and I'm sure the upcoming AF100, which means it will better sustain its value.

So, for longevity's sake I'd say the Mark 5D II. That's what I would choose if given the choice. Not only is it "forward compatible", but it's also tapeless.

The only question mark, IMO, is the adapter because that too is transferable. So depending on the price of the Mark 5D, I guess you could also consider keeping the adapter and just selling the DVX, weird as that sounds.

In the end, they don't shoot television shows on a DVX, but they do on a Mark 5D II.

Ups... We are so into HD that I completely forgot that the dvx100b camera is SD! :)

Well... nonetheless, in your shoes I would save my bucks for a used EX1 at the end of this year the beginning of 2011 (I would expect it to be a lot cheaper since Panasonic and Sony will be launching their 4/3 and full size 35mm sensors respectively), and use it with your setup rather than spending the money on the 5d.

LOL

This is too funny because this is EXACTLY what I'm doing. Everyone is running around all super excited about this new camera, and I'm like, "Man, EX1s, 35mm adapters and Mark 5D IIs are going to be selling at bargain basement prices."

Can't wait for 2011

i agree, been discussed a lot of times...

as for me - i don't believe in DSLR video - jellyvision 100%, lots of shortcomings and image IS video, and no real resolution...

35mm adapter still looks much better, and what concerns light, if you do quality work - you do light anyway, so what's the point... and modern adapters are not that light eaters.
