DVX100A vs PD170 (or other).

Hi All!

I am thinking of purchasing a DVX100A primarily for wedding videography. Low light will be an issue. I am aware of many WEVA (Wedding & Events Videography International) members who use Sony PD150s/PD170s.

I'd say I've been doing research now for several months. I can't quite bring myself to spend big bucks without being absolutely convinced Panasonic is the way to go.

Any thoughts on the pros/cons of the DVX100A vs PD170? Please convince me!

Regards,

You answer your quetion, if low light issue and primary usge of camera in those situations, with out ability add or control lighting - get Sony.
DVX100 greate creative tool, but with benefits come cons.
Lighting one of them, 24p - manual focus , other (greate for film, tereble for fast events. Try to Zoom, focus and keep in frame at same time by one peorson.)
But i saw lots of good wedding videos done by DVX, but most of them done with preset cookie cuter settings.
I found that DVX requer more time to prepare for sooting if you want to get best result.

I don't own the 170 but do own a couple of VX2000s and the DVX100A. I also have used the 150 several times. I have shot tons of weddings with the Sony's over the past 3 years. If you are soley planning on using your camera for wedding video, I would definitely suggest the PD170. Longer lens, longer battery life, auto focus works very well, much better low-light and the gain up is much cleaner. It's just easier to get a good picture in run and gun situations (at least it is for me).

However, for more controlled situations, much better audio, tweakability, progressive scan and gamma settings, the DVX100A is my first choice. It definitely produces stunning images given proper time and setup.

Hope this helps,

Well... Thanks! Great input.

FYI I plan on getting an on camera light (Frezzi?) just in case... or some form of alternate light source.

For run & gun operation, it sounds like the Sony is the way to go. The Panasonic sure sounds appealing too. Perhaps both?!

I will be attending the WEVA Town Meeting in Atlanta on Monday. I hope to learn yet more.

Thanks again. Glad I found this forum!
