I have a DVX100b....and 3 audio questions - HELP!!!

1.) If i have audio bars/levels appearing on the ccd moniter that means i have audio going into the camera and onto the tape - correct??

2.) when plugging into a sound board board - getting a line feed - should i have the 48k inputs on?

3.) Exactly how do you use to Sennheiser Wireless lavs with the DVX100B?

thank you!1

1. Well, yeah, if the bars are fluctuating and such. A better way to be sure you're getting something useful is to plug in a set of headphones. Static can "look" as beautiful as dialog or a concerto.

2. You mean 48V phantom power? That's used only for condenser microphones (and the BLUE Ball mics, and I think Royer makes a phantom-powered ribbon mic now... but I digress). So, no. Make sure your mic/line switch is set to line for soundboard input.

3. I'll leave to someone else, not having a Sennheiser.

To be clear - there's 3 places where you have important audio controls.

1) Under the LCD you'll find input selectors and phantom power on/off
2) On the front of the camera (looking into the lens) you'll find mic/line switches for inputs 1 and 2
3) on the left side of the camera, near the bottom rear, you'll find gain pots.

For recording from a board, assuming 2 channels, set the input selectors to inputs 1 and 2, set the mic/line switches to line, and do whatever you need to do with the gain pots to get the levels you want... probably somewhere a bit lower than the mid position for a good +4 line source (though not all line sources are good or +4).

The DVX doesn't really have "mic inputs" - it has mic/line switchable inputs. So they shouldn't be "switched off" - they should be switched into line mode. For recording with the built-in mics, set the selectors to INT 1 and INT 2 - which is sorta like switching the Mic/Line inputs off.

As to the Sennheiser wireless:

1) Go view this very good tutorial- <http://www.dvcreators.net/products/sennheiser_wireless_movieframe.htm>

2) The wireless has a 1/8" to XLR plug. Plug the 1/8" into the wireless receiver. Plug the XLR into either input 1 or 2 of the DVX. I mount mine via the included shoe mount on top of the cam. If I'm just using the one lav, then I plug into input 2 and set both input selectors under the LCD to input 2. Then I'll set the levels (using the gain pots) so that one is lower than the other.

You also want to be careful on the DVX that you are actually in fact getting audio from the external mic, not the internal. A good test that I always encourage on sets where we record into the camera (not many). I ask the DP to always tap on the internal mic and make sure the levels don't move. (Of course he can always look at the switches, but usually he/she is framing the shot, so at least the levels are in the monitor and I can check it.

(BTW, I was acting in a project where they shot the entire day on the internal mics because they forgot to switch it over...oops...the entire day was lost (audio-wise...)
