Dvx100a shotgun mic set up help

Im new to the dvx product. Please give me some basic set up help. I will be filming on the go,solo for mostly in-door activities and some local out door sporting events. Please advise me in a microphone seletion and im also in need of camera set up..the manual was king of confusing for the set up..if i use a shotgun mic can i use the internal mic for ambient sound? And are the shot gun mics stereo? I would be thankfull for any imput!
