DVX100A and Double System Sound

Will be using my DVX100A on a steadicam most of the time...cabled audio is not an option for me...besides going wireless, in which the boom operator will not have audio monitoring capabilities, how feasible is it to use a PMD670 for recording audio and synching in post...is synching that difficult and time consuming that it is better to go wireless...any info would be appreciated...thanks.

Re: DVX100A and Double System Sound

Using the PMD670 is a much better option than going wireless.  The quality will be better and booming without being able to monitor the sound is ridiculous.  Just use a slate and syncing won't be a problem--digital audio recorders are by nature very constant in recording speed.

Thanks for the response...you don't think I will have a problem with sync regardeless of 24P or 30P or 60I settings?

Re: DVX100A and Double System Sound

You shouldn't have drift issues if the frame rates are the same on the recorder and the camera, drift issues should be minimal.

The recorder (PMD670) does not have a frame rate setting...guess a little trial and error is in order...anyone else having moderate success with this setup?

Well....I'd rent it and do a camera test, if I were you.

Re: DVX100A and Double System Sound

There aren't frame rates on digital recorders.

I've used the pmd670 on 2-cam shoots and it's not that big of a deal. If you have to occasionally pull your audio who cares? Like Dave said slate it and go from there.

The drift issue won't be dramatic, if at all. Normally audio drift isn't an issue for anything under 10 minutes or more anyway... and guess what? If you're doing double system sound then you'll have to sync up EVERY new shot. So who cares? Are you planning to have uncut scenes that run 10 to 20 minutes? If so then NOBODY wants to see your movie.

BTW... in post the pmd670 at UNCOMPRESSED sounds NO better then the DVX with mics plugged straight in. I know from experience.

Re: DVX100A and Double System Sound

Thanks for all the help guys...not doing this for sound quality reasons, but because I need my cam on the the steadicam at all times....if it produces as good of sound, I will be happy...just hope the syncing is not to big of a pain.

Re: DVX100A and Double System Sound

Mmmmm...digital recorders do have frame rates. Here are a few:

Fostex PD-2
Fostex PD-4
Fostex PD-6
Zaxcom Deva II
Zaxcom Deva IV
Zaxcom Deva V
Aaton Cantar
Soon to be Fostex FR-2 timecode option
Sound Devices 722

I think you may mean non-timecode digital recorders don't have framerates, which is true...my brain fart on that one.

I agree with what Matt said.

If you can't plug into the camera, then the PMD670 is the best, cheap alternative.

Re: DVX100A and Double System Sound

the nomad jb -3 with preamp or mixer could do the same
