DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

A while ago I was planning for shooting with the DVX100 (not A) and so I asked someone about the best way to get 16x9 in a DVX without using an adapter. He said that if you film with regular 4x3 and then stretch it to 16x9 in after effects, there would be greater detail than any other mini dv camera, because it would hold up the 360 lines of resolution. Now I just found out that the rental facility actually has a DVX100A which has an in camera 16x9. SO my question is: Should I use the in camera 16x9 and then stretch it in after effects as well? Or would I just edit in premiere using a 16x9 file? Thanks guys, Ive got less than a day to learn everything there is to know about the DVX so Im doing a blitzkrieg study session :).

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

Just go with the in camera DVX100A squeeze mode.
One click and your done.
You are now editing an anamorphic file. I don't know Permier, but in Vegas select one of the widescreen templates and your set.

Yep. As long as you're shooting in progressive mode with thin line detail, the in-camera squeeze mode does a very good job of stretching the image to be anamorphic.

Thanks Barry, so when editing (after Ive shot with the 16:9) should I edit in a 16:9 file or should I edit in 4:3 and then bring it into after effects to do the 16:9? Thanks for taking the time to answer!

If you shoot in squeeze mode, you edit it in 16:9 because the footage will all be proper 16:9 footage.

Thanks Barry, if only I had a wide screen tv I could see how good this looks. Oh well, my comp should be fine for now :).

Does shooting in squeeze mode mean that you have to have the anamorphic lens? (I haven't ordered mine yet)

Thanks,

When should you shoot letterbox then?

I heard about squeeze mode, but no one has mentioned the letterbox option.

All the best

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

Letterbox is for when you want to shoot video that will be displayed on a 4:3 TV, but you want it to have the "letterbox" look of a widescreen movie.

Squeeze is for when you want to shoot video that will be displayed on a widescreen TV.

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

what should you do if you are looking to display on a 16x9 tv? I have a dvx100 and I can not find a squeeze mode. Is there one?

Hi MtSurf,

I don't remember exactly where, but I have seen it there on the menu, when I was playing with it.

It is definitely there.

Just look for it in the menu

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

The original DVX100 does not have squeeze mode.

If you're displaying on a 16:9 TV, you have two choices: either shoot with the anamorphic adapter, or stretch your video in post to be widescreen. You can't electronically stretch the video in-camera on the original DVX100.

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

I think there is a big advantage of always shoot anamorphic (or squeeze) instead of "letterbox" because many (maybe all) DVD authoring systems force DVD players to display 16/9 (if you use 16/9 TV and set your DVD player,s menu accordingly) "AND" letterbox (if you use a 4/3 TV and set your DVD player accordingly).

so there is no more need to encode a 4:3 letterbox version and a distinct 16:9 version.

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

For DVD, that is correct. For VHS release you'd still need a 4:3 frame. VHS is disappearing, but it's still a formidable force for a while yet.

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

Barry,

i couldn't tell about other NLEs, but in Final Cut Pro HD, i can take my whole native 16:9 finished product, put it in a 23.98 fps 4:3 (non-anamorphic) timeline, and it will automaticly convert it to letterbox 4:3 for VHS.

best of both worlds...

Sorry guys, I own a DVXAE. Didn't know the original one didn't have that.

Anyway, all the best

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

All this discussion raises a question for me. I'm shooting a weekly tv show in Houston with the 100A. Right now, I'm shooting in 30P. So the show is broadcast to homes that have both 4:3 and (presumeably) widescreens. If I shot in squeeze mode, what, if any, problems would that present?

Re: DVX100A 16x9 in post or in camera?

JBN,

now... that's a whole different problem...and this is a real problem...

With DVDs, the Player is "awared" the MPEG2 file is anamorphic.
...and you have to set your DVD player the first time you plug in (menu) to fit your TV set (4:3 or 16:9).

This is not the case with normal broadcast TV stations.
They broadcast in 4:3

if someone is listening the program on a 4:3 TV, no problem.
If someone listen to the same program on a 16:9 TV, then, OR the top and bottom portions of the image will be croped (lost) , OR a left and right portion of the 16:9 screen will be "in black" if the whole height of the image is viewable.

So you could record in 4:3 letterbox and print to tape in 4:3, or you can record in 16:9 anamorphic (lense or squeeze) and "letterbox" it in post for 4:3 tape broadcast.
People who own 16:9 TVs could then magnify the letterbox 4:3 to fit the whole screen.

excuse my english...

good luck
