DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Could someone please explain to me the main differences between the 100 and 100A because I have trouble understanding all the tech talk involved in the articles I have been reading on the net.
Is the newer version really worth another $1000? I plan to use the cam for a run and gun doc. and possibly a music video. Thanks guys.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Fixes some things that aren't there in the 100(no)A.

Auto focus in 24P (still slow, but at least it's there!)
Video Gain in 24P (go figure, they couldn't figure out how before)
Audio lag in 24P (fixed)

But, if you don't got the dough, make some mo!

Good luck, save for the A

The MSRP difference between the two cameras is $200, not $1000. And yes, it's well worth it.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

no, it is not worth the money if you're on a tight budget. There, i said it. the dvx100 is still the best camera on the market.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

$200? Maybe I have been looking at the wrong places but I haven't seen many places offering a new DVX100 and ebay certainly shows a steep price difference between the two.

CaptnM, thanks for those tips. So most of the differences have to do with shooting in 24p I take it? Are there any huge differences when shooting in 30p- I ask this since I plan to shoot my doc. in 30p. I am mainly concerned with picture quality, color, and performance under low light situations. Does sound really make a difference since it is suggested to buy a separate mic for this camera anyway?

Also, am I being silly wanting a DVX for a doc. and shooting in 30p? Should I go for a cheaper camera all together? I was just kind of sold on this camera after hearing about all that cine gamma stuff.

Thanks for your help!

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

aren't documentarys supposed to look real? instead of making it look like a movie, make it look real. the dvx100 still has the best 60i though, but if you dont have it in your budget a pd170 is GREAT for docs, ive used them for docs at school. the vx2000 is good too. a documentary doesn't call for the film look as long as you keep the viewer interested.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I'll disagree with M.Summers. But he does give you a very convincing other side of the story.

The 24p is a very strong feature of the DVX. You won't regret spending the extra cash.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

in my opinion, for a doc, 24p is uneccessary (60i looks more real-to-life)
eh
just me. if youre planning other shorts (non doc) 24p rocks.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Documentaries were made on film for decades before affordable video cameras shifted the balance of shooting over to tape. I don't think the choice of 60i or 24P should be dictated by whether you're shooting a doc or not, you should just choose which mode you prefer for the look of your project, and if you prefer 24P, go ahead -- that's how all the filmed doc's were shot.

As for the $200 difference -- there are no more new DVX100's out there, are there? That camera was discontinued almost seven months ago. So are you comparing the price of a USED DVX vs. a NEW DVX100A? If so, obviously there's more at play than just the new features, and there'll be more of a price difference.

When offered as new, the DVX100 carried an MSRP of $3795, and the DVX100A has an MSRP of $3995.
