I've used Panasonics new 900 24p cam (runs about $35K with lens) and its friggin awesome. However, the DVX100 is not far behind. It's just lacking those fat CCDs and a nice lens. It's a good $4k investment, awesome for spec work and I believe ideal for film students who want to make their projects look big on a low budget.
Exciting things are happening with video right now. Canon and Sony are on their way with 24p and they should once again revolutionize DV filmmaking.
