DVX100 shallow focus

Hi filmlover,

The DVX100 (and other cameras similar to it) is capable of some pretty cool stuff, and if you are clever you can get some great shots with the background out of focus. (Depending on where the camera is, where the background is, etc.) However, this is still fairly limited (try it out and see for yourself) and this is where an adapter comes in.

With the adapter you will be able to achieve shots with shallow depth of field, and it is much easier to do so. To see examples of the DVX100 with adapters, check out vimeo, youtube etc. for examples.

It depends on what your goal is, there certainly are more important things to take care of before you put money into an adapter (Sound being one of the main ones), but if you have sorted out all the other gear and can afford an adapter, it will be worth your while.

Hope this helps.

If you just want your background to be out of focus, and have enough room. Have your camera far away from your subject and zoom in on your subject, then when you focus on them, the background will be out of focus.

Btown is right, but remember, your iris needs to be wide open. If it is stopped down, everything will be in focus. Also, your background will need to be far away from your subject and camera even further away from your subject.

If you have the option you will get best results with the background very far away from the subject, it will hide the compression caused by the telephoto lens
