Re: DVX100 Adapter Question

Lee,

At Century we value constructive criticism of our products. I would appreciate knowing the reasons that you were disappointed in the performance of the .6X Century wide angle adapter.

This information might also help me recommend something that you would find more satisfactory as well as possibly help us improve the product in the future.

If for any reason you prefer to email me instead of discuss this in an public forum my email is bturner@centuryoptics.com , however this forum is fine with me as it may encourage others to comment as well.

Re: DVX100 Adapter Question

Hi Bill,

I noticed on the Century .7x for the DVX100 the edges blur and have a strange pattern and color displacement. This is the only problem that is preventing me from purchasing one. I have used your adapters in the past for the PD150 and did not notice this problem. I was wondering why Century chose to release such a product? Thanks so much!

Sincerely,

Mark

Re: DVX100 Adapter Question

Mark,

Thankyou for your post. The Century.7x Wide Angle converter was originally designed and sold for the 16X Zoom on the Canon XL1 which has a short focal length of 5.5mm. The Panasonic DVX100 has a wider zoom- 4.5mm focal length.

While we noticed the issues you mention, some lateral chromatic abberation, increased distortion and some resolution loss at the edges at full wide, users seemed satisfied and the unit could be quickly modified to fit the bayonets on the DVX100 as opposed to a long (6 months to a year) R&D effort to develope a new converter specifically for this camera.

We have been doing that work, pushed by our desire to improve the product and the coming of the Sony HDV camera which has a lens of similar focal length and size.

The only way to dramatically improve the quality is to reduce the power of the converter and we have been prototyping a .75X unit that addresses your concerns directly. We hope to finalize the design and have production units around NAB time in 2005 (April).

Part of the difficulty is that quite logically, the manufacturers will not make the design data on their lenses available, nor advance examples for testing. We can only make assumptions based on experience and then test and measure the first examples we can get our hands on.

We have always had a no questions return policy and to my knowledge, none of the hundreds of the .7X 's sold for the DVX100 have been returned for the reasons you state- tho like yourself, some may have opted not to buy.

Re: DVX100 Adapter Question

Bill,

Will we have to wait until NAB for the DVX Anamorphic or will we maybe see that sooner? Full zoom capabilities? Thanks!

Re: DVX100 Adapter Question

Don and others,

Re: the Century Focussing 1.33X for the DVX100 with full zoom capability

At this point I am not sure anyone would believe a projected date for the new unit ( I am not sure I would ! ) and I will not go thru the litany of very real reasons this project has been delayed and delayed.

My most recent hope is to have a prototype at DV Expo in Los Angeles in Dec and production units by NAB. We are waiting for the latest set of optics to be finished so they can be tested and then build a proper housing, not the engineering test fixture we are using.

I will try and give you all more definite info when the latest glass is finished and tested.

Re: DVX100 Adapter Question

I'd like to thank you Bill Turner of Century Optics for monitoring this board and offering answers and suggestion. Beyond answering questions regarding his own products, Bill pointed me to info on a product that competes directly with his own. I've noticed that many other manufacturers' reps seem to come and go on this board (ususally coming with a product release and going soon after) but Bill is always here to help wherever he has knowledge. Thanks.
