DVX vs XL2

I bought a DVX100b to shoot my first feature with but something occured the other day. The DP I recently hired wants to go with the XL2 that he owns over the DVX100b that I own.

He told me besides the fact that the XL2 has native 16:9, it also has a wider aperture on the lens and better focus abilities. And he owns a lot of lenses and filter for the XL2.

For my DVX I bought an anomorphic lens to get true 16:9, which won't allow for any additional lenses or filters to be added to the camera. Plus there's problems with getting good focus and depth of filed with the anamorphic lens attatched.

What's your opinion? I originally got the DVX100b because I heard it was the best indie camera around for under 3-4K.

I've seen great footage come off both cameras. If your DP uses an XL2 then I would probably say think about that option since he'll be more comfortable with that and able to use the camera to the best of his ability.

When it's something like XL2 vs DVX, it should really come down to whatever camera your DP thinks he can milk the most out of. How it's used will have more to do with your result than which one you use.

up until HD, the XL cameras were second to none, the dvx is just a poser compared to the xl1 and 2, frames mode is far better than progressive scan, progressive scan simply combines the fields, frames, actually takes 30 individual digital photos a second.

The DVX anamorphic adapter is a NIGHTMARE. I shot a feature with it and you spend most of your time worrying about critical focus (thank you, Barry, for your life saving charts and tips). Plus, forget about tight close ups. Don't use the DVX with the adapter!

I believe the DVX was considered better by many because it costs less, leaving more room for other investments. You can get the same results with both, so you should stick with what your operator knows best.
