DVX Users in Missouri/New Orleans... *BP*

I am headed to New Orleans in approximately one week, looking for fellow DVX users willing to help or even just email or call with support, contacts, tips or criticisms. I am flying in for a special project relating to the gulf coast oil spill crisis. This is not a prestige or profit based project; if anyone has contacts that might be able to use this towards assistance for affected gulf residents, i will gladly sign over rights. This is NOT a commercial project.

My budget is basically $1500, which is nothing. I have some gear, and some experience, and yes this is a naive endeavor, but i have a direct correlation and experience to this tragedy. I am not asking for anything besides contact and a bit of help whilst in New Orleans. I have a camera, i have skills, i have a Letus (lol), but i have no mics, no mobile crew, and no contacts.

Frankly, i have very few posts on here, so i expect to encounter a lot of criticism and skepticism; i am no vetted or respected or even long term member here. I understand and respect that. For those skimming, skip the next section, as it is irrelevant.

Introductions aside, i will tacitly lay out my credentials and reasons as succinctly and briefly as possible. In 1989, the Exxon-Valdez oil spill devastated a very small bay in Alaska. Without getting into unnecessary details, i wound up in Valdez, and attended kindergarten there, while my parents worked Pool Camp and the distribution/pump station in Valdez; i do not remember nearly as much as i wish i do, but there are certain elements that stand out in my memories. A tsunami warning, from south in the Pacific, expected to hit Prince William Sound, while my mother and father and I were perched on a seaside cliff camping, and chaotic scrambling for the passes ensuing. this is the first time i remember the word 'tsunami' and 'warning', and the first time i remember seeing people panic. A ship miles ashore, stranded amongst the evergreens, victim of a previous tsunami. A boardwalk and fisheries, shut down due to the spill, animals slathered in crude oil, shorelines i was not allowed to go near, and that is about it really. Sadly i do not remember nearly as much as i wish i could. I am a college graduate with a bachelors in International Studies, and associates degrees in both Physics and Philosophy. Since Valdez i had wanted to be a marine biologist; since then, and since college i have worked in photography and videography, and successfully started and sold 2 businesses completely unrelated to my degrees or interests.

This hits very close to my heart; so much so i have decided to walk away from business as usual in the hope of making some sort of difference with respect to the gulf spill. Pictures and video ive seen depict devastation worse than what i remember, wider spread, and in a much more sensitive area than simply one sound in one part of a distant state, not to downplay Valdez; but the gulf is SO much more vital and vivacious, and that was a $2 billion plus cleanup cost, after Exxon squirmed out of paying full cleanup and restoration costs; this recent BP incident, considering its breadth and (literally) depth, as well as economic inflation factors, should WELL exceed the bill of Exxon for their cleanup.

What i am looking for is members here, friends, family, anyone i can be directed to for assistance shooting, be it an interview or an opinion, direction or help filming, and especially audio equipment and assistance utilizing it. Any help from users here, family/friends, small businesses, and constituents directly affected is precisely what i need; monetary concerns are secondary at best. This is, as best as i can correlate it, a far worse disaster to the US than the Exxon-Valdez spill was, by a great order of magnitude.

I can be contacted at p_raris@hotmail.com or 570-617-9353; and i will respond as soon as i am able, usually within 4 hours. Emails please put 'GULF' or 'BP' in the header and i will prioritize responses.

Again i would prefer direct assistance to monetary donations; i really have no idea how to accept them legally anyways; if you have information as to how to properly accept donations, i welcome the information.

I apologize to the admins for multiposting this, but it is very important to me that i reach the largest audience i can. I will keep this thread updated as much as i can. I volunteered back during the disaster that was Katrina, and witnessed firsthand the mayhem and chaos that ensued, saw some of the best and some of the worst humanity can do; that was a brief if strong hit; this is totally different; this is an economic and cultural hit that will echo for decades; these are things that change the demographics and the social dynamics of the regions they affect; truly the gulf will never be the same. Politics aside, preferences aside, this may become the greatest long-term issue the gulf bordering countries have to deal with, period.

Buy a $250 camera called an HD Go Pro that you can put on a broom stick handle and shoot the oil underwater aiming up blocking the sun out.

Good luck with your project, it needs to be done, If I had the time right now I'd volunteer for a couple days. I might have time when the slick hits the Carolinas in a month or two.

let me know via email, phone, or PM when or if you might be able to help; i am making this my personal top priority at the moment. any interviews or footage would help, again this is not a commercial endeavor, rather to show how really devastating this is now, and the problem is bound to grow.

Go Pro HD cam is a great idea; right now i have a D300 and HX A1 at my disposal; all the rest are company-related and spoken for. If anyone has contacts capable of utilizing this footage, or providing me with connections to have it used, by all means contact me. i would be more than willing to assist.

You got it!

Go Pro HD cam is cheap and waterproof, wipe it down with solvent to remove the oil when done and you can re use it. You'll get some really dramatic shots with it, wait tell the oil hits a pretty reef, you can show it from underwater.

BP will fry from those shots.

I'm presently on location in Baton Rouge, from where I will be sending positive thoughts your way. Good luck on every aspect of your project.

As a longtime New Orleans resident who has lived through both Katrina and this oil spill I can assure you that Katrina has had and will have a far greater impact on far more people over a larger geographic region for a longer period of time and was and still is financially far more costly than this oil spill can ever even remotely approach.

The fact that I am, indeed, still living in my own house a month after the oil spill, whereas a month after Katrina I was a refugee far away from home should put any thoughts of comparing this oil spill to Katrina very much to rest.

Do me a favor, when you're in NOLA, don't compare a disaster that cost thousands of human lives to an oil spill.

That said, I wish you every possible good opportunity while working on this project. I wish the world had more people as willing to donate their time and money to helping others.

I'm a big weather guy and would just like to say Katrina is prob going to happen again in a couple months, this time with oil and tar involved, I'm praying it doesn't happen, if it does, I can assure you that you have not seen anything yet.

People are concerned for a reason, it's what you don't know you don't know that'll really........

BTW I'm glad you survived Katrina, It hit close to home for me and took a friends life.

No question, if another Katrina comes in while the oil cleanup is ongoing, we're screwed. The entire Gulf Coast is screwed. Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Cuba, and all the other Caribbean islands.

EDIT: I should clarify what I mean. I don't mean oil is going to get spread all over the place. Claims like that are probably just hysteria as a hurricane would most likely help break up the oil and in fact improve the situation, not worsen it. What I'm saying is that another Katrina-level hurricane would screw us over anyway.

I totally respect that opinion; I was in Louisiana shortly after Katrina with a regional church group that I was not a member of, but felt compelled to act; but I feel this is a 'nail in the coffin' effect; what Katrina started this might finish. I am of the opinion that a human life is worth far more than money or the economy, and your way of life is more than worth saving for such base reasons as fishing or petroleum production, and I wish I had been more capable then versus now; it would have been a greater good. A very good frend of mine lost everything due to Katrina; I did not mean to downplay it's effect, and perhaps I should restate myself. My apologies to you. Your perspective is both humbling and humiliating. The comparison was mostly aimed towards non-gulf residents and how it might affect them; to associate and identify with the wider audience for this cause. At the same time there were lives lost in this event; and while a pale shadow compared to that lost in Katrina, it still reverberates. Had I been older and more capable, I might have done more or better. This time around, I hope to truly
make a difference.

I in no way meant to downplay the horrors that were your realities during and after Katrina.

Why compare at all . . . these are both major catastrophes. 60 days of oil at how many barrels per day. . . . If they don't get it in check soon you bet people are going to be out of their homes because the industry that is dependent on those waters will be gone. . . . along with many other life forms.

Zissou, good for you. Without a bit of naivety lots of great accomplishments could not have even begun.

Best of Luck

Great thing you're doing here man. Best of luck to you and if i could, i'd fly down there to assist you.

God speed.

thanks to everyone for all the support and comments.

anyone and everyone is welcome to help in any way. ive run rather fund-dry so i started selling some equipment and misc stuff check out the for sale threads shortly. i have 8 other projects, from small time to international gigs going right now so im just trying to short-sell myself to get this shot and readied for post when i return.

again many thanks.

Scouted the USS Alabama in Mobile yesterday. There's strings and gobs of oil washing ashore, though not an awful lot. And there's people in small motorboats bobbing around 100 yards off the beach, paying out what look like absolutely useless, flabby, skinny, pathetic little yellow booms.

Yeah. Good luck, with that.

And now, most boom and skimmer operations (for whatever their worth) are being halted because of Hurricane Alex, due to hit the Texas-Mexico border Thursday...

UPDATE

i managed to wrangle up an audio guy and gear *****, a boat rental, interviews, and some logistic and location support thanks to some political contacts. Hopefully we can get a much deeper insight from more angles than the media are providing at the moment.

so the audio guy and gear ***** backed out, i did manage to hook up with another documentary filmmaker, as well as a LOT of contacts. due to arrive july 21 thru aug 8th thanks for all the support!
