DVX User documentary

Hey Folks

A few days I wrote about an idea for a documentary about this place. And how we can all contribute to it. Really it is the only way to make this work and be unique. THis place is just great, and I think with all out interests it would be interesting and appealing (see 4500 co-producers from a few days ago).
So in order to make this work this is what I am looking for. I huge cross section of users to point their dvx at themselves for a bit. Sit in front of your edit station, or where ever you think works for the story. Talk about you as a film maker, how you found this place, what you login as, how much time you spend here, what you do with your camera, and what you have gained, and given to this forum. Now do not worry about your experience level. I would really like all types of folks, from those just turning on their cameras for the first time, to the seasoned vets. I would also love to see some of your work with this camera, or others.
Together with all of this, and some sweet screengrabs and other fun ideas I have been tossing around I think this could be real interesting.
YOu could also talk about digital film making, and how much easier it is now. YOu could get philosophical (come on I know you want to) or take it light. Tell me something in relation to this site.
I have spoke to a few friends that thought that if it came out right we could easilly find a broadcaster.
So all I need is your help. I have time to put aside to cut this, and if any of you effect wizards want to help with the graphics end of it that would be sweet.
The way I would work out the rights is however many contributers I get, I will divide it out to a percentage, and that is your stake in this. It could be a percentage of nothing, or who knows. But it has the legs to be something unique and interesting.
So, who wants in?

JUst have to spread the word out there!
Hey you moderators(think chunk in Goonies)
If this gets some interest in the next few days, is there a way I can reach all the members. Not sure if they all come to the cafe. I was scared at first.

Re: DVX User documentary

I remember reading a recent post about making a DVD with DVXuser Short Films. Has it changed into a documentary now? I liked the idea about a DVD of short films. It's easier to pull together. A documentary would be nice, but logisitically it would be difficult. Maybe combine the two ideas - have short films but with commentary from the creators.

Another good idea.

Re: DVX User documentary

Could I audition models for my part? I'm sure you would rather see some really hot chick pretending to be me... ;D

Re: DVX User documentary

My roommates and I interviewed maids once. Not that we had the slightest intention of hiring one.

Re: DVX User documentary

I wish I can do it but my probation officer said I can't be on camera. I'm still on house arrest. ;)

Re: DVX User documentary

BLUESPIDER, I prefer you remain and international man of mystery anyway...it just seems to fit!

This is a wonderful idea, and I'd be up for it, but wouldnt it wind up taking about 25 DVD's to view it?

Re: DVX User documentary

Well if I get all the tapes I will edit it down. I was thinking an hour long doc about our comunity. The DVD idea is an interesting one as well. Perhaps I am not comunicating this well enough. What I was thinking is that we all contribute to it, and it is parred down to make a interesting and doc.
Come on now Spider. Surely you of all folks can think of a creative way to keep your secret identity intact. Infact us here would expect nothing less from you.
If enough people are willing to shoot a bit of thereselves, and pass along a greatest hits of their work(or greatest misses). And if we can get the rights perhaps a LIGHTNING BOLT, LIGHTNING BOLT here or there.

Re: DVX User documentary

I'm sure a self-made documentary would be endlessly fascinating to us, but to make it interesting to the rest of the world, it has to tell a story, or follow a thread, or whatever.

I am reminded of a successful 'Making of' documentary about the world of 'PC Demos', and the geeks who do them. (A 'PC Demo' is a standalone program written for IBM PCs which is intended to demonstrate what really can be done with the hardware. Super geek factor!)

Anyway, the Making Of segment is very well done, by members of the community, with interviews, examples, background music, etc. They start by defining what a PC Demo is, show early examples, then trace the evolution of the genre while doing interviews with some of the luminaries of the art, delving into how they got interested, why do they do it, how they met, etc. Plus, they also show what hardware and software they used to capture the output of these programs. Really, really fascinating.

(You can buy the DVD at Amazon, search for 'MindCandy, Volume 1'. I have this DVD, it is really cool. Recreational drugs sold separately.)

Anyhoo, in order to make this project much better than it would be otherwise, someone has to impose a little order. And I am not that person. This mighty volunteer must come up with a basic storyline, then kind of cajole/assign bits of it to the participants, then maybe edit the results.

We are camera geeks, let's do something that looks like we know what we are doing with the DVX100.

That's my serving suggestion.

PK, you're probably talking about the topic I started last week. It mysteriously disappeared. I was off for a few days, bud Disjecta brought it to my attention. Anyway, I agree a DVD of short films would be easier to pull off.

I am thinking about how to organize it so it's easy on everyone's time and pocket. I wouldn't like anyone to have any 'real' money to put into it - only the cost of burning a CD or DVD and mailing it to the person who would be putting it all together. I think a good start would be to go through past DVX contest and see if we have enough material for 2004, then ask people to send their AVIs or MPGs.

Someone (was it disjecta?) mentioned the music rights - that would have to be left up to the individual film makers - I know when people submit work to photographic competitions and/or mags for publication, they usually have to sign a statement that model/property releases have been granted, so I'd think we'd have to have something to that effect from film makers.

I am still just thinking of it - enough work on my doc as it is, but I have access to film/media interns who would probably be very interested in seeing other people's short films.

Jerry

Edit:
I meant to imply the interns could put together the DVD, learning something in the process...

Re: DVX User documentary

It'd be a cool idea. Also a chance to finally see who's who behind the mask(s).

Re: DVX User documentary

I think there are two strong story lines to follow.  One is the tightness and support that there is here.  It is a true international community bonded by similar interests, that is helpful and pretty tight.  Two is the emergence of technology to make films affordable to produce.  We all have computers, most of us own cameras, and a NLE station.  So for the price of a suped-up coffee at starbucks, we can create quality work, work that with our cameras is broadcast acceptable.  Now as somebody who has been doing this for 12 years is scares and excites me.  More people doing it, but more opportunities to show the world your talents. ( these are the type of things I would love people to talk about)
So no, I do not think it would interest just us.  I do not have the time, nor the energy for an exotic home video.  I thought if any situation could create a documnetary produced all over the world, for a rather small budget, and show the world how filmaking is changing this is the place.(the how this was made is the best marketing ploy that this doc has)

Re: DVX User documentary

I actually like the idea, but I need to sit on it, sleep on it, eat on it, then some more sleep... you get the idea.

Who is the director? Who is the editor? One problem with multiple authorship, if you allow me to call it that way, is different styles and different pacing. I am not an editor, but I can imagine it would be a nightmare to pull it all together.

I am not discouraging anyone from doing it (hell, I might actually shoot something for fun next weekend), but I am trying to imagine what's involved.

But can pull it off, I think it could be a hit.

J.

Re: DVX User documentary

Well January is a bit slower for me up here. the cold tends to scare people. So I have some time now to cut. I will use the site as a help forum. And I was hoping I could convince some of the finer graphics folks with some help with some ides I have in regards to playing with some of the archives from this site.
From the members I need a tape of the previously mentioned content. What I get will really determine if this will fly. I think itis an idea that could work out to be pretty interesting. I need to reach as many members as possible, with a large cross section of experience and talents. But I am will to put it together. Just looking for many contributers.
