DVX torn

Boy, I'm sooo freakin torn right now between the XL2 and the DVX-100a. I'll be shooting shorts and features but I really don't know which to get.
I understand that some feel the XL2 is for docs and broadcasts and the DVX is favored for the "film" type of look but does anyone who owns the DVX ever feel limitted at all or does the DVX really meet your needs?

Thanks

When I was looking at cameras for my latest project I started out by looking at the XL2. Why? The place where I work was using a bunch of XL1s. I also needed a minimum of 2 cameras.

So I spent some time doing research. In the end when I tallied up all of the pros and cons, the DVX100A ended up easily at the top of the list. So I wound up getting a pair of them.

For me, it was the right decision with no regrets. (Oh yes, and I have a swack of Canon lenses and still got the DVX. Simple -- Micro35)

For me at least, the interchangeable lenses is irrelevant, because after you spend money on the camera, accessories, and NLE stuff, you won't have too much dough left to spend on a decent lense. Plus, I have heard the DVX can get a much more filmic look than an xl2. I have also heard people say that the main reason canon has an interchangeable lense system, is because they don't have any high end broadcast cameras, just high end broadcast lenses.....

I shoot a lot of indoor closeup stuff. The wide angle DVX is much better for this than the longer Canon. If I was shooting outdoor sports or nature, I would want the extra reach provided by Canon or interchangable lenses.

you guys are helping me lean towards ordering my order tomorrow! lol thanks for your insight! really...

So what's the best thing to read so that I can learn the DVX quickly?
I mean, I know that playing with it alot will help and all but this will be my first cam ever so I'm REALLY ignorant to the settings and what mean what...... : (

I have never, ever seen an XL1 or XL2 with anything other than the stock lens, except for pictures. Even the local rental house said they usually rented XL1s with the stock lens -- nobody was interested in other, "better" lenses.

I think people who could afford different lenses could also afford a better camera and went 2/3.

Hey ... have you tried going to B&H and test out both cameras? You are in the area so you should ... the only good way of really understanding the camera is by messing with it ...

viewfinder on XL2 sucks. It's hardly a viewfinder. Manual Focus sucks on XL2. XL2 is mad ghetto. it's a joke. canon is a joke w/ this xl2. panny is re-designed from professional industry feedback. dont hesitate. dvx all the way. besides, where else can you get any question about your camera answered in less than 24 hours from more than hundreds of professionals. this is the place to be. this is the film bible

get Barry's guide. It's for sale here. I own it, its a small book, and comes w/ a free DVD. It's SO worth it. And a great guide to keep w/ you at all times. It's probably better than any XL2 guide u can find, oh, and once again, the xl2 is a pathetic substitute for the dominating dvx100a. i here the 24/p looks better on the dvx also.

also, low light. this thing dominates live performances w/ stage lighting. it's insane. the yeah yeah yeah's dvd is done w/ a dvx. it's so beautiful. this cam makes me so happy and makes me feel the loot is so worth it. its such a magnificent piece of engineering.

If you buy the camera from a legitimate authorized dealer you will get the best book to read, Barry's Book, along with Magic Bullit software and I beleive now an extra battery or tapes or something...

Ok, I did it. Order is placed!
My DVX will be at my house tomorrow morning in the am. I'm too excited to wait until Tuesday so I had it over nighted to me! WOOHOO!

I alos bought the larger battery and the soft case for the extra $200...

Do you think it's worth paying the extra $200 for that?

Congrats coffee. I hope you bought some tapes. You will get one more battery ( a few months from now) as part of rebate program. If you need more, DVXuser has great batteries.

Then again, Canon actually made film cameras before Panasonic even existed...

They may have, but why do they constantly build underpar video cameras.. their lenses i trust. not their video cameras. I like canon, I almost bought one, til i found this place. I almost bought a GL2... then, i saw for the same price (or a little more) I could have THE BEST. Canon comes nowhere close, they had a chance to prove themselves w/ the XL2 ( i've used the xl1... talk about impracticle....) and they fell flat on their face.

oh, and BTW ... who puts the LCD under a Flip Up EyeViewFinder... WTF? It's so small and just so cheap looking compared to the dvx. When holding both in hand, its' like holding platinum (dvx) and nickel (xl2) ... worst analogy ever. (comic book guy voice)

LMAO!

If your getting ready to spend 5000 bucks on a camera, I suggest you goto your local rental house and rent em both for a day.. being in NJ you have lots of options. Even better if you goto a retailer that also rents the cameras, you may be able to make a deal that they deduct the rental rates from your camera purchase.

Thanks Jarred... I actually spent a little more time with thw two cameras and decided to get the Panasonic! I'm in love! :engel017:
