DVX Saved my Ass...Again

Was asked to do a shoot with the Sony Z1 Camera. Having never used this camera I had it shipped to me a day early so I could get setup on it and get my scene files looking good.
Did some tests with ImovieHd and was very impressed with the video for 1080 60i.

But....when I went to hook up an external mic through the XLR's all hell broke loose. Could not get a mic input level no matter what...tried every possible config, spoke with the tech support for over and 1.5 hours trying every possible mic and set up...it sucked.

Ended up doing a dual system record with a slate using the Z1 to get video and my trusty DVX recording audio.

Ass...saved!!! Sorry to the editor....having to go old school.

.. nice, good to hear the DVX is still making a difference in the wacky new world out there. it really is a very versatile cam

.. although i have to wonder .. out of all the things to save of yourself.. why not save the brain or heart ...instead of the butt?

Good point loser....thanx for the support.

Tha'ts interesting. I'm around all of these recording engineers at work who think that recording sound to camera instead of dedicated audio recorder is a big no no.

If this is in fact a misnomer, then I may be able to save myself about $5K on a portion of some audio gear I'm ordering at the end of the month.

It definitely depends on the mic pre-amps of the individual camera - (as well as mics, operator, etc.). On the DVX, the pre-amps are among the best.

Sound has been a sore point over the last weeks, the cam is fine, the choice of mics is fundimental! I am learning as I go along.

Hey Taylor - You should check out the Audio forum as there are several knowledgeable peeps who hang out there. Oleg could probably answer anything field audio-related you could think up.

Just tell him that you think the ME-66 is the best mic ever produced and you'll become fast friends... NOT! ;)

In the meantime, here's a high quality headphone amp.

What are people doing for Headphone amplifiers for the DVX?

Radio Shack.. er i mean Circuit City or whatever the hell they are called now sells a pretty good little headphone amp for 30 bucks that has 3 ports on it so you and the director can have a listen.

They are the exact same thing boostaroo sells.
