DVX Recognition in Intel FCP

Two months ago I bought an Intel iMac to add to my arsenal of iMacs and G5's. Not sure if I have or have not imported and exported to a DVX since I bought it (I can do captures and "edit to tapes" with any of the older iMacs). The problem is that FCP can not recognize my DVX100 at all.

Obviously, I bought FCP 5.1 and upgraded to the latest patches. I'm using external firewire drives for my storage. Here are some of the things I have tried and found:

- Reset both the Mac, hard drive, and turned the camera on and off. If I turn the DVX on before the hard drive, then the hard drive will not show up. If I then turn off the DVX, the hard drive shows up on the desktop. This says to me there is a firewire conflict somewhere. I'm not sure that the internal iSight is not conflicting with the camera either. Same thing happens with other firewire cables.

- Have done the QuickTime receipts reinstall:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

- Have trashed preferences, repaired permissions, yadda yadda.

- Have replaced all firewire cables, tried attaching the camera through the hard drive and directly to the computer.

- Tested the camera with iMac G5 and works fine, so not the camera.

Anyone else using an iMac (Intel) yet with FCP and a DVX? Do you have these problems at all?

Ted

Did you rebuild the desktop and make sure the camera is on before you start the computer. Good luck.

I've got the same problem. My new 2007 iMac won't recognise my DVX100A at all. If I look in the system profiler, in the firewire section when anything else is plugged in, it gives info on that kit, iPod, drive etc... But when I plug the DVX100 in
, it spins the beachball then can't see the camera. I've tryed the same as you, different cable, it all works on my G4.

Did you manage to get it to work at all?

Cheers,
Dave.

I have the same problem with a new aluminum iMac. The Apple discussion boards report many others are having problems getting these machines to recognize firewire devices of one kind or another.

Here's a work around -- hook the camera up through an external firewire hub -- any firewire device with two firewire ports will do. In my case, I hooked an old firewire based cd drive to the computer and then hooked the dvx into the cd drive, so the cd drive was functioning like a hub. The computer recognized the camera and FCP6 was able to see and control it through the log and capture window. Others have reported the same thing on the Apple discussion boards.

Hi Guys-

Some time after I initially wrote this post, I came up with this list of tricks that seem to work. Try them out.

A few steps to try out:

1. Turn off everything. Then turn on in this order: Camera, Computer, any FW hard drive.

2. When you turn on the computer, you might as well reset the PRAM. Hold down Apple- option-P-R
right after you turn your Mac on and hold these keys down till you hear the startup chime THREE
TIMES. You should only have to reset PRAM every month or so if things get whacky.

3. Make sure you have a good firewire cable- test it with another computer or camera.

4. Reset your QuickTime installation. This is something that has come up as of late as a
contributing factor for connection problems with cameras. Go to this webpage and look at the
tutorial:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

5. If none of that works, try deleting your FCP preferences and QuickTime Prefs.

6. Have an iSight? Sometimes these may create conflicts, unhook it and try connecting your camera
only. Also, some hard drives create conflicts, try ejecting them and disconnecting the FW cable.

7. Open up System Profiler and look under FIREWIRE to see if your camera shows up. If it does ...
open iMovie and try to capture just a short segment to the internal drive.

8. Sometimes the type of firewire cable can create conflicts. For example, I had bought two 4-pin to 6-pin cables recently and one of them created conflicts, while the other did not. They were same model, same brand!

If none of these things work, you should check out all of your connections and make sure they work with something else.

Hey Guys,

After having the same problem (iMac not recognizing the DVX100a by Firewire) I solved the issue after following one of the suggestions by Terry Pell. I bought a Belkin Firewire Hub and voila, it worked like a charm!
