DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

This looks like a very cool device :D

The DVX-POD is an iPod-looking Portable Media Player that features a 7-inch color LCD (720x480), 20GB 1.8-inch HDD, and weighs only 600g. You may notice that the DVX-POD has no visible front panel buttons, but has cleverly hidden the media controls at the top of the device with A/V ports situated on its sides. Video playback formats include MPEG-4, DivX 3.11, 4 and 5, QuickTime 6 and WMV files, but can also record TV video directly into MPEG-4. As for audio, it supports WMA and MP3 audio files and can also record voice memos via its built-in microphone. Photo formats include JPEG, GIF, and BMP images.

Perhap's you might like to enlighten everyone as to what is "suspicious"?

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

Was this mentioned primarily because it sounds like a cool media device or as a potential LCD 16x9 screen for use with a DV camera? I'd be interested in it for a 16x9 monitor for my Xl2. Seeing as the Panasonic 7" LCD is in the $500-$600 range this could be an option. Anyone considered this?

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

I just haven't heard much mention of this...their website has little to offer and seems to have slightly odd english, they mention specific branded products in conjunction with the sale of theirs (a legal no no) and they're doing business through a generic paypal ordering page with no hard contact info to be found anywhere on their site.

I'm not saying it's a scam, it just appears to be very fishy and I would not feel comfortable sending my money their way.

(note, I just checked and the paypal link is gone now...but I'm positive I navigated to it yesterday)

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

the term DVX-POD might lead people to believe it is associated with panasonic.

Or Apple.

Bingo! :D

I thought it would be a great 16:9 field monitor. Plus, it can record (not dv though) so you would be able to playback shots.

As for if the distributor is legit, I have no idea. But, if the technology is real then there's a good chance we will be able to get ahold of it sometime soon. Either through the mentioned distributor or another.

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

i did a google and there are many site mentioning this. i contacted the us distributor and was told it will be available november 1. think i'm going to sell my ipod for this. :)

Hans, Why can't it record DV?

James, the Paypal page is here:

Click "buy the DVX-Pod" (bottom of page)
Click "pre-order now" (middle of page)

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

Isn't that just damn sketchy for a retailer to be using paypal? I mean, I know paypal is easy and ubiquidous for us small time guys and tiny businesses...but for the US distributer of an anticipated product? That's what I find fishy about it.

As for actually wanting the thing, yeah I'd take one...but I think my wallet would kick me in the nuts afterwords.

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

Where do you keep your wallet? Or rather, where do you keep your nuts?

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

I've used Paypal to order from B&H and from EVS, so I don't think it's necessarily bad for a retailer to offer paypal. It is a little curious if they offer ONLY Paypal... I mean, getting a merchant account is no big deal, I got a merchant account when I put on the ICExpo and was able to take credit card orders...

The support for recording that I have read says it will "record TV video directly into MPEG-4".

There doesn't appear to be any indication of support for reading DV. But, hopefully I am wrong! ;)

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

It looks intriguing and it certainly has a plausible feature set and price. However, it does seem a little fishy that there hasn't been much advance press. I mean, if they expect to be shipping on Nov 1, they've already got a warehouse full of these things. Normally, I would expect to see a bunch of reviews of the actual device in advance of the product release, but I couldn't find any actual hands-on reviews. I sure wouldn't want to be one of the first people to fork over my paypal account to these folks. If it is legit, than the first model will likely have some significant bugs.

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

I find it amusing, the "sounds fishy" comments about this little device.
Perhap's, as this is a rather interesting device, they have chosen to keep quite as to get a foot up on the competition? Hardly a new practice.

As far as accepting Paypal, it's a very effective method to recieve payments without the overhead of setting up for credit card payments through your bank, and you can hardly consider this "fishy", but rather good business if you've poured all your money into development.

It's also unnessicary to say "the first model will likely have some significant bugs", when you haven't anything to base that statement on.

You seem to be building the gallows before the crime...

btw, it might be noted that DVXuser's own Barry Green is selling his new book with payments through....Paypal (no other options, Barry? "It is a little curious if they offer ONLY Paypal").

Except that obviously this company, as a distributor, has poured no money into development. I agree Paypal is effective and easy, but its difficult to find any serious business using paypal exclusively for their transactions.

Barry’s essentially printing his own book with no idea as to the potential sales numbers, I’d hardly consider him to be a “real” business in the traditional sense. Thus, it would make sense for someone in his situation to use paypal for transactions.

In this case we have a distributor for one of the largest markets in the world introducing a product that many expect to be one of the hottest items for the holiday season, and their only method of payment is Paypal? No corporate address? No phone number? No state of origin?

Phishing is a real threat on the web, and it’s one to be taken seriously. There’s nothing wrong with questioning a site that offers an expensive product, yet provides not one single method of contact. It might be completely legitimate, but it certainly is unusual enough for me that I wouldn’t feel confident in inputting my paypal info.

I find it amusing that you take such offense to me saying the site is fishy.

A couple of observations. First of all, it's clearly a Chinese product - either Taiwanese or mainland Chinese, so I'm not overly surprised that their web site is not fully developed, since they don't yet have product for us.

I Googled DVX-POD and got a bunch of hits, mostly of the "it's almost here" variety. The two links above are a couple of random examples. Since they were from sites in the UK, Australia and everywhere in between, I would have to conclude that if it's a scam, then it's a GLOBAL scam.

I think the real question is whether these guys can deliver product and if they can, how can we best use it to fill our needs.

Re: DVX-POD 7-inch portable 16:9 video player

I just have to add that it's best to do your homework about a supplier. This company may or may not be a scam. But it doesn't hurt to be a little suspicious. A lot of us have let a good deal get the better of us in the past. This seems great, but it's nothing that anyone can't live without before finding out a little more.
