Well, twice the horizontal resolution isn't nothing, but I have to admit, I'm surprised.

Now, the question is, is that "775 lines of resolution" as viewed on a monitor, or 775 pixel lines in an MPEG picture matrix?

As viewed on a resolution chart on an HD monitor, and further as viewed from the MPEG-2 data extracted to a 1440x1080 .BMP file.

I thought that the CCD's in the Sony camera were actually 960x1080, which was then uprezzed to 1440x1080.... I definately remember reading that somewhere.. anyone wanna confirm? Deny? send out the hounds?

The Sony CCD's are 960x1080, yes. They offset the green CCD by half a pixel's width to pick up extra resolution, yielding 1440 luma samples per line. That then gets up-rezzed to HD-standard 1920 on playback, and recorded on tape as 1440.
