DVX Live 8-bit FireWire Capture vs. Tape Capture

After much searching of yonder internet, I've *almost* found the answer to this question, but not definitively:

Does capturing from DVX100b live (i.e. tethered) to 8-bit uncompressed actually increase the quality compared to capturing from the tape?

I've done live uncompressed HDMI captures with HDV cameras, and the quality is WAY better because it bypasses the step where it compresses the crap out of it onto a DV tape. I'm *assuming* that the same is true with the DVX, but I desire affirmation from you, wise DVXuser community.

Thanks,
Owen

If you're capturing through firewire, then no -- it's already compressed.

The only live outputs on a DVX are firewire (already compressed, but component) or s-video or composite video. Composite is going to be the worst. The question is whether uncompressed s-video capture is going to compete with DV-compressed firewire capture; I'd suspect the firewire capture is still going to look better. But it'll be identical to what you capture through tape (excepting any tape dropouts, of course).

If you want amazing, jaw-dropping uncompressed footage from a DVX, look into the Andromeda from www.reel-stream.com. That'll blow away footage from any HDV camcorder.

Rats, I was hoping this wasn't the case. I've been avoiding the Andromeda because it's so expensive, though everything I've read sounds fantastic.

Well, thank you very much for the useful response.

Cheers,
Owen
