DVX + Lenses

Besides setting up your DVX with a 35mm adapter (SLR or Cine) or a wide angle lens, are there other lenses that can be outfitted on the DVX, a lens of better quality than the stock glass?

Thanks.

You mean, removing the stock lens and using a 35mm lens directly in front of the CCD for that DOF effect? I recall this one person who did this or tried to do it while building a DOF adapter, though I don't know where the thread is now...

He did what?

I am not necesarily going for DOF, I am just thinking about better optics and sharpness.

C'mon, was this THAT dumb of a question?

Well, there is an anamorphic adapter for better quality 16:9, but i think i get the sense from your post that you want to remove the stock lens and go with something else? If so, no(or at least not practically), the DVX has a fixed lens, the other lenses mount directly in front of the stock glass.

But quality wise, while it ain't varicam quality, for a $3,000 camera the leica lens on it ain't nothing to sneeze at.

ditto. that leica lens is pretty kickass. the dv format is your weak link in clarity, not the lens.

of course of course, but even minidv with an hd lens will look far better.

is the stock glass on the hvx an hd lens, or did i hear that wrong?

I've never heard of an 'HD' or 'SD' quality lens, i don't really think they're classified that way.

and I seriously doubt that grafting a different lens on a DVX would make much of a difference, The leica lens is more than good enough for a camera with SD chips.

Frankly it sounds like you're not happy with image quality from your DVX, and if so, you're barking up the wrong tree. Like we've been saying, the limitation on DVX image quality is from the SD chips and the DV format, NOT the lens. If you really want better image quality, buy a HVX200.

Frankly, I think the whole focus on image quality is overrated at times. I've shown my work shot on my DVX100B projected on a few big screens and all the non-film people freaked out, they all thought it looked beautiful and was shot on film. Now people like us who do this for fun or a living can usually tell, but your average non-film person doesn't know, and more importantly, doesn't CARE, as long as it is a great story and looks halfway acceptable.

this is all true, to a certain extent. thanks man. FYI though, there are HD lenses, but I guess when I heard that the HVX had an HD lens, I heard wrong. It's just that I shot my last two films with the HVX/PS 35mm adapter @ 1080p24 and one s16mm. So going back to the DVX is... well... a change.

thanks dude.

I feel ya. I'll tell ya though, one thing I've noticed is most non-filmmaking people people only really know what 60i video looks like, and automatically assume anything that looks different from that is film.

I've had tons of people ask me if I've shot my projects on film, they're all shocked when i show them the DVX, they just can't believe a video camera can do that. While 99% of the people on this website can tell the difference between a DVX or HVX and film, the average person can't, and more importantly deosn't care. While we constantly struggle to eek out every bit of image quality, i think the average viewing audience only really wants to see us cross a threshhold where our work is decently lit and doesn't scream 'video'.(don't get me wrong, RED is one sexy mofo, but a turd filmed in 4k is still a turd. Make sure you've got a great story before you turn that camera on)

I remember i watched 'Open Water' with a non-fimmaking friend, and when I asked him about it later he said " i dunno, it just looked...different" i explained that it was shot on video, and then I showed him 'November'. He thought the story could be a bit stronger (frankly, it was a little cliche) but liked the look and thought it was shot on film. He was shocked when i told him it was shot on an earlier version of my DVX100B.

basically, my opinion on filmmaking elements and their order of importance:

1. story
2. acting
3. lighting/composition
4. image resolution/quality

Don't get me wrong, I plan on getting an HVX later this summer, but mainly because I want variable frame rates and 4:2:2 color sampling, not because i'm dissatisfied with the DVX image.

Image resolution/quality IS important, but not nearly as much as we often like to think it is.

That is the truth.
