DVX is seeing colors differently...

Last week I set up some lights for an interview. I had a red gel splashed onto the rear wall on one side and a green gel splashed onto the other side of the wall. Well you clearly saw the light with the red gel through the camera but the light with the green gel looked yellow through camera! What is up with that? I was using a dark green like a forest green gel on a 250 watt light.

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

Are you set to FLOUR color matrix? What is your Chroma Phase set at?

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

Chroma Phase is set to 0 on both of my 24p settings. I however have it set at -3 for shooting 24p outside at night.

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

I forgot to mention in my original post that before I white balanced the Green light was coming into the camera as Yellow. After I white balanced I noticed it did change to green but it was a real soft green, closer to yellow. However I could clearly see Green and RED on the wall with my eyes!

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

Was any of the green light falling on the white card when you did your WB? If it was, that could be part of the issue.

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

Green is a difficult colour to "throw" because it absorbs so much light from the source. ie it does not transmit or pass as much light as other colours.

Notice that someone standing in a green pasture on a bright day does not show the effects of green reflection or bounce from the grass. If they were standing on white concrete (cement) the bounce light shows strongly. Same for other colours.

Green and yellow are spectrally very close (they are both not Primary colours) and it does not take much to tip them either way.

???

Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow are the primary colors in film layers . . .

Red, Blue, and Yellow in paint . . .

Red, Blue, and Green in light . . .

So both yellow and green are primary colors in some respect.

Unless you meant something else?

(Not that this has anything really to do with the thread! ::) )

I find that to subdue the red inderent in the DVX, the chroma phase and chroma level should be ratcheted down to taste.

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

RGB are primary colours in light. "Both Green and Yellow can not be primary" . In fact they sit along side each other in the spectrum
(ROYGBIV) ...and that is why it is easy to shift between the two.

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

Purples and magentas can be tricky as well. They have a tendency to reproduce in video as something closer to red or blue.

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

You can always make it a hard-hitting, gritty B&W interview. :)

Unless, of course, it's an 80 year-old Grandma talking about her 6 Grandchildren and her 14 cats.

Unless, of course, she's talking about the day her grandkids ate the cats...

Re: DVX is seeing colors differently...

Green is the most important color in your camera as red and blue are compared to it to make black and white balance.
