DVX headphone level very low?

I was working on a college SD 302 last month, and the headphone amp on that this could seriously deafen you if you're not careful.

Plugging an Oktava MK-012 into my DVX100b (without a mixer) easily provides a good strong record signal, but the problem for me is that the headphone level is so low that it is barely possible to monitor the sound properly.

Right now I can't afford a mixer, but I feel I may need to get one just to get a strong enough headphone signal! I know there are other good reasons to buy a mixer, but this seems to be the most significant one.

Is this right? Is the DVX100b headphone amp really that feeble?

Many thanks
Lucas

P.s. I am considering the Sign Video ENG-44. I just can't afford the SD302, and may be forced to employ muppets to do my sound, (actually I mean my girlfriend) so I need to keep it simple.

I'm using Beyer Dynamic DT-100 phones by the way, which are VERY good headphones, a standard in Pro audio for the past 20 years.

Obvious question, do you have the volume turned up on the DVX's headphone output?

Not familiar with the Beyer headphones, perhaps they are really inefficient? The Sony MDRV-7506s that most shooters use provide plenty of output from the DVX. Sounds as if you either have the volume output turned down OR you have an impedence mis-match between the DVX and the Beyers. If so, the solution is to use different headphones, namely some that are more efficient.

Yeah,
but comming with different impedances, maybe you have the 400Ohm one...?
This would mean the DVXs HP amp doesn´t have enough beef to power the Beyers...

Exactly right. 2x400 Ohm it says. Well that sucks a bit. Can I alter them at all?

Many thanks

Hi Lucas:

No, the impedence is what the impedence is.

I would suggest spending the U.S. $99.00 for some Sony MDRV-7506 or V600s. They probably won't have the sound quality of your Beyers but at least they will work well with the headphone ouput of the DVX.

To be honest, the sound quality of production headphones doesn't have to be the best, you just need to be able to identify noise issues really and be able to seal out the outside sound. The 7506s do that well, that's why probably 85% of production sound mixers use them and not better sounding Sennheisers, Beyers, etc.

I ordered some 7506s today off US eBay - they are half the price of over here!! Not a hard decision - $100 or £100.

Many thanks

Problem resolved with Sony 7506s. Thanks all!

Just to say, though, that the volume is nowhere near what is possible with a SD302 - which is crazy loud at full volume.

Also, to my ears the Sony 7506s sound better than the Beyers DT100s.
I also changed to the Sonys recently for camera monitoring, still use my AKG271s for monitoring mixes though...
It´s really crazy that stuff shipped from the US is still cheaper than buying in Europe, even European brands (well whatever a "European brand" is considering todays globalization anyway...)
