What is the max hours of head usage before a DVX is considered garbage or running down? I met this guy who wants to buy my gf's DVX but he is worried about head usage. The camera currently have about 39hrs of usage.
You are many hours away from anything to worry about. Mine has 25 and its barely broken in. I know there are guys here that have hundreds of hours on theirs.
A shooter brought an original 100 into the office to get a DVrig for it. He asked me how to tell how many hours his had... I showed him the menu function. Dude had 930 hours on it. I hear the DVx's can go 3000 hrs on MQ tape. (This is becoming like Knights' Lore stories ;D.)
Don't listen to these guys Norm. At 40 hours your girlfriends DVX is barely good for parts only. As a favor to a fellow Canadian I will take this "worn out" unit off your hands for a few hundred bucks. Maybe I can salvage it for spare parts.
Yes, they can be replaced for $800-$900. However, I think it might be better to just buy a firewire hard drive capture unit like the the Firestore FS-4 (or similar) for the same price.
absolutly, I want a firestore but can't justify it right now. I'll wait another year or so for prices to drop on hard drives so I get more for GB for the same price.

It counts all the time that the heads are engaged with the tape. Recording, playing or just sitting running with a tape in it (not in standby though).
