DVX for stop animation?

Other than pushing play, stop, play, stop is there an efficient way to use a DVX100a for stop animation?

Thanks!

Yup, that's the best way to do stop motion animation with any Firewire-connectable camera. A few video editing programs can capture one frame at a time, but usually with not many features. I use StopMotion Pro - not cheap but great features.

ok

ok

Ok, cool. So, once I use the 3rd party software to capture the frames can I export the frames to a NLE like Premiere Pro 2.0?

Thanks!

yep, as long as the frames are one of the formats that the NLE takes it's no issue. there might also be an option for stop motion in the nLE itself.

Uh??? Why??? With a reasonably cheap digital SLR, or heck, even a cheap 'happy shots' digital one can have far better resolution than on a DVX... or any current consumer/prosumer digital video camera...

I'm shooting some stop motion animation and some live action scenes. I wanted the stop motion animation footage and the live action scenes to match. I assumed (dangerous thing to do) it would be best to do both on the DVX. If this is not the best idea how do I go about making sure the stop animation is the same frame size as the dvx fames? I want my footage and frame sizes to match.

Thx

proper stop motion software doesn't just export a series of stills (although that's an option if you need it), it actually exports them as an AVI, ready to drop into your NLE, and you can specify things like frame rate.

match image size

match image size

My DVX100A shoots 720 x 480. If I use a still shot camera to make my stills I'd like for the frame sizes to match. Is the only way to match them to find a still shot camera that shoots 720 x 480. I realize this may be a very dumb question, but I'm not sure if the resolution is an accurage gauge of frame size.

Thanks

I'm sure Premiere can resize the pics, whatever size they are.

But if your film will mix live footage and your stop motion animation, I still think you're better off shooting your stop motion animation through the DVX too, at ordinary DV resolution - the resulting footage is far more likely to match the look of the live footage.

Using a still camera might be more sensible if your entire film would be stop animation.

Thanks to everyone for your input and creative thinking. It's great having a medium that allows you (me) to discuss creativity with people of like minds.

I just thought I would throw in my 2cents, I use Framethief for Macs, I don't know if it works on PCs. I shot a short film a couple of years ago with a Panasonic DVC60 and the stop-mo as well, turned out great. If you want to see it go to my website and click the "Ne Me Quittte Pas" link, the stop-mo is at the end of the film. Here is a handy link to the Stopmotion Forum where you can find a lot of info

This kind of film making is still a lot of fun and still used quite a bit in this day of digital. Have fun.
