hi. i'm new to this forum and am planning on getting a dvx soon. this is a great resource.

has anyone bought or seen the filmmakers kit from abel cinestore?(abelcine.com) can you tell my whether or not it is a good kit and worth the money. also, can someone please explain matte boxes and what they are used for. i have been in video for years but this is going to be my first foray into digital filmmaking.

thanks in advance

Re: dvx filmmaker's kit

The Filmmakers kit you are describing looks pretty solid. I see it includes a good tripod, the anamophic adapter from panasonic, and I believe the Chroziel matte box. You would want to price those components seperately to make sure you are getting a good deal, but it appears to have quality gear.

I've seen some kits that are nothing but junk (i.e. Ebay) cheap tripods, worthless lenses, etc.

The Matte-Box serves a few purposes:
1. Holds filters (usually two or three)
2. Prevents sun glare from hitting the lens
3. Looks very cool ;D

Am i missing anything?

Re: dvx filmmaker's kit

just a word about abel, i bought my dvx-100a from them as they were the first place in the country i could find who had it in stock, i got my dvx-100a in late december when b&h and others were saying it wasn't even released yet and that there was no scheduled release date.

it was fun to call up and order stuff and they asked what camera i had and they told me that i must be mistaken (stupid) because that model wasn't out and that i must be misreading it and i obviously had a dvx-100

the people at abel treated me really well and went out of their way to get me the camera asap.

...some of the ebay stuff is good though. Steer clear of the ebay stores! A lot of times you'll see a fellow filmmaker that is off-loading his dvx w/ a bunch of good quality stuff. His loss is your gain! You just gotta be patient and always keep an eye on the auction boards...

Re: dvx filmmaker's kit

I don't know why I'd get the Panasonic Mike. I would also like to choose the filters I bought (For instance, I'd like to buy Grad NDs). Their kit approach is somewhat odd. For instance: they say it's a flmaker kit, and yet they supply a (shitty) on-camera mic that will be useless for any dramatic work. I'm not sure why spend more than 1.5 thousand for a sunshade that takes filters. But it is the only matte box for the Anamorphic adaptor, no doubt.

I am not saying it's a bad kit, but I'm saying it's not for me. So it might not be for some other people. Although all the equipment is solid, and the tripod is awesome (I have one too), I'd say that there are some first-class gear that I just don't need right now.

make sure you really want all of that, and if you work with video for some time, you probably already have a lot of this stuff...
