I will be shooting a documentary in India the last two weeks of July. I have a person there for the first two weeks of July. (They will be shooting basic 60i DV B-roll footage with consumer DV camera)

My role: I will be directing/shooting interviews and narrative sections when I get there. I have a 100a and would like (at least) the interviews (which will provide most of the audio to cut to) to be shot in 24pa or, you know, nice footage (that's why we own DVXs).

I guess I'm looking for the best approach to use the B-roll footage which is standard 60i and the 100a footage at 24pa (or better suggestions)? I would like to avoid a lot of pre-processing/conversion and get right to the edit. I need an approach to capturing the fooage...simple and sure.

I'm not opposed to shooting all 60i and making it work like that...because it will look good...I'll make sure of it. I just want to get the look of 24pa as much as I can...I need a plan that is solid, good looking...and simple. FYI: it will be delivered in VHS and DVD.

Re: DVX - FCP Advice

Philip,

I hope you get this response as it looks like you are a visitor to this site.

My suggestion would be to shoot the interviews in 24p (normal) not advanced. This would allow you to edit in a traditional 29.97 timeline and not having any problems putting your b-roll footage in. This will also allow you to get the 24p look for the interviews.

Rule of thumb for which mode to shoot in is determined by what your final product will be sent out on. Since you are sending it on VHS and DVD you should shoot 24p(normal) mode. If you were going to film, then you should shoot in the 24pa mode.

Hope that helps you out. You won't need to do any conversions at all if you shoot in the 24p(normal) mode. You don't need to apply the pulldown when you import it into the computer. Just pretend it was shot on a normal camera.

Have any questions let me know.
