DVX and Mac Firewire

I currently operate a single G4 Mac and I am attempting to connect a Panasonic AG DVX100A video camera to the firewire. Everytime I connect the device, my firewire ports suddenly dissapear from the System Profiler. I ran the hardware test, but it indicated that no firewire devices were installed. I also have an external firewire hard drive that the computer recognizes until I plug in the camera. I went and bought a new firewire card but my camera is still not recognized. I've repaired permissions, and tried Command-Option-P-R. I've also tried booting down and unplugging everything, then booting back up. No luck. I'm Having trouble determining if this is a camera problem or a Mac problem. Any ideas?

Plugged it in while the camera was on? Probably blew the firewire card in the camera.

The last camera I borrowed had the same problem, someone accidently blew out the firewire in the camera. Plugged in another camera to capture footage and it worked fine.
