DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

Sort of confused how I should import 30p footage shot with the anamorphic lense. Can someone please give me a brief run down? And also, some proper settings (size, etc) when exporting (to Quicktime for example). Tips on faking a 2.35 aspect would be sweet too. Thanks a bunch!

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

import like any other ntsc material..(29.976 fps..ect..)

edit as 16:9 material designating the pixel aspect ratio to 1.2..you can designate the project as no feilds if you like, but you may as well leave it ias lower field first..for going back out to ntsc..

actual frame size is 864 x 480 for still fame exporting

in breif,..if you letterbox mask the top and bottom of your project(i made a 864 x 480 tiff in photoshop with white in the middle, and black masking bars top and bottom, then did an rgb key over the video layer.. but use whatever key you like almost any will work great when its just pure black and pure white) , you will have a. 2.35:1 ratio image left.. you can slide your images up and down with keyframing behind the mask to allow for proer framing adjustments if any are needed. . then you could crop the project down to only the viewable image if you wanted to output only the image without black bars. for quicktime..ect.   ..if outputting to dvd leave it masked and designate the m2v as 16:9 material.

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

How about just rendering a simple 16:9 video? I set the footage as DV widescreen (1.21), but what should the output settings be (size, aspect ratio, etc)? Without letterbox... 720x(Something smaller than 480)??? Any further information would be great.

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

Depends on how your editing program handles it.

In Vegas 4.0, all you do is start a regular NTSC DV 4:3 project, and if you import an anamorphic clip, you set the properties on that clip to be widescreen. Then when you drop it in the timeline it'll automatically resize, unstretch and letterbox it for you, for proper display on a 4:3 television.

When I render it at 720x480, it does not letterbox though. It still seems vertically streched. What should my render settings be, as far as height (720 width), aspect ratio, etc WITHOUT letterbox bars.

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

Again, what editing program are you using?

Vegas knows about aspect ratios. It does the scaling for you automatically.

So you set up your project to be NTSC DV, 720 x 480 with NTSC aspect ratio pixels (.9091 or whatever), and then you import an anamorphic clip. Right-click on the clip and get "properties" for media. There you tell it that the aspect ratio is NTSC DV Widescreen (1.2-something). Immediately the clip will show up in the proper aspect ratio. If you put it in the timeline, Vegas will unstretch it and add letterbox bars.

If you're using a different program, the process may be different. But don't ever change the size, it should always be 720 x 480 for both anamorphic and 4:3 video.

I'm using Avid Xpress yet I'm posting this in the Vegas section. j/k :P My questions refer to Vegas 4.0.

I don't think you're understanding my question. :) I have the importing/editing figured out, it's the rendering/exporting that's throwing me off. My 16:9 video looks perfectly letterboxed in the preview window, set at 1.21 aspect ratio. Yet when I go to render the video, the final Quicktime video is NOT letterboxed, and the video appears vertically streched. Maybe my Quicktime export settings are wrong. HOWEVER, I do not wish for the video to have the black bars, I want it to have a proper aspect ratio @ 720 pixels wide without it being letterboxed, obivously only possible if the video's height is smaller than 480. What is the method for doing this? Thanks. :)

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

Okay, there's more than one problem here then...

All DV video is always 720 x 480, always always always. You cannot set the height at less than 480. If you do, the codec must fill in the height to make it 480, and it will make it 480 by adding (you got it:) black bars!

Where we're not connecting is that you're exporting a quicktime. I never do, I always export .AVI files. When exporting .AVI files, you can choose either an NTSC DV template (which would letterbox the anamorphic footage) or an NTSC DV Widescreen template (which would export the footage as-is, without letterboxing).

Widescreen footage is only widescreen when viewed on a widescreen television. It looks "squished" when displayed on a 4:3 television.

If you want your widescreen footage to display on a 4:3 television, IT MUST ADD BLACK BARS. There's no other way to do it. If you want to see it on a regular television, but have it appear in the proper widescreen aspect ratio, you have to letterbox it. Otherwise it just won't fit -- you're trying to cram a rectangle-shaped video into a square-shaped box, something's got to give.

" the final Quicktime video is NOT letterboxed, and the video appears vertically streched. Maybe my Quicktime export settings are wrong"

The Quicktime you've been exporting is right, it's proper footage for display on a widescreen television.

" I want it to have a proper aspect ratio @ 720 pixels wide without it being letterboxed, obivously only possible if the video's height is smaller than 480."

Can't be done. Video has to be 480 high, otherwise it wouldn't be DV. You can scale your video to 720 x 360, which will give you the proper aspect ratio, but the codec MUST add black bars to pad the height up to 480.

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

Sorry, maybe I should have mentioned this is for internet purposes only. :) So 720 x 360 would be the correct resolution for a 16:9 video without letterbox? Thanks!

Re: DVX + Anamorphic Lense... Importing/Exporting?

Okay, that sure clears things up! ;D

Yes, resize your video to 720 x 360 and you should have a proper 16:9 video suitable for internet distribution.
