DVX+4x4 mattebox in a backpack - PERFECT fit!

hey guys,

As I have a job comming up that will require I am very portable (shooting "run and gun" style in Costa Rica), I hunted high and low for a good backpack that would fit my DVX with the CAVISION 4x4 mattebox and rod supports installed.

I hate the idea of a case/bag that requires the camera be disassembled for transport. (my main bag for studio shooting is the "cinebag"- that is an awesome product!)

Anyway - here is the unit along with my 2 sets of radio lavs, extra batteries, spare tapes and some other odds and ends packed into my new "Lowepro - photo TREKKER AW II"

looks pretty sweet indeed.
except, when you're carrying it, doesn't it put all the weight on the eyepiece?

how much that bag cost you?

Re: DVX+4x4 mattebox in a backpack - PERFECT fit!

I plan to bunch up my "camera towel" under the eye peice where the battery is, and there is a velcro strap that will go throught the handle to reduce the effects of the camera sliding down when it is carried.
It is a pretty tight fit, so with the bag zipped up and strapped closed, the camera really doesn't want to move.

The bag is $289.99 (Canadian) at Henry's

This bag is also apparently designed to meet "carry-on" requirements, so it is a good option for flying (that is the main reason I bought it)

henry's is fun, they charge full list on the things i've priced, always 10-15% more than b&h or rush

I have one and it works well for me. Very comfortable to wear. I load my DVX in the same orientation as schteevie does. The pack comes with an extra thick divider that I have placed flat where it contacts the back of the camera underneath the eyepiece. So there's no weight on the eyepiece at all.

If you're in the US, the way to buy one is on eBay. A few Canadian camera shops (including Henry's) sell them through eBay. I got mine new from Carmen's last summer for $171 US including shipping.

hey TeleDan,

I tried what you were talking about with the thick divider, but it is attached to an other thin peice, and then another thick peice... so without cutting it, I couldn't make it work..
did you cut yours? can you post a photo of how you set up the dividers?

Re: DVX+4x4 mattebox in a backpack - PERFECT fit!

Looks good. I have the CompuTrekker, the same pack but with a space in the back for a laptop. I also orient my camera with the eyepiece pointing downwards. But, to keep the camera from sliding down I have squeezed the pads at the top so that they catch and hold the lens shade. Similar to what you have done in the photo. But, a little tighter. I also have the long dividers positioned so that they fit the camera snug. When the pack is vertical the camera doesn't budge.

schteevie,

I had to pull out the bag to remind me of what I did. Looks like I cut the two thick dividers from the connecting thin piece and then stacked the two thick pieces together to form a 'bumper' that supports the weight of the cam underneath the eyepiece.

Otherwise, I divided up the case pretty much like you have in your photo except for a larger pocket on one side for audio gear (shotgun, furry , etc.). If my description is not clear enough, I'll see if I can post a photo.
