DVX 100B footage - editing question

Hi People,
I shot a shot film last week with my DVX100B and have a few questions about the technicals.
I am kinda putting it all together here so that I can get all my answers at one place.
You can either give me straight answers or direct me to the correct thread.
Everything would be appreciated.

The questions are:

1. If I shot the movie in 24P mode what project type should I edit the whole thing. I mean should I use DV NTSC (.9) 16-bit audio project settings or DV 24P project settings?
The intended output source is DVD. Let me know the workflow( capture->project setongs->edit timeline) that I should follow to preserve the quality of the footage.

2. When I am trying to apply some color correction for test purpose I am noticing a lot of grains getting developed in the footage. I am editing a test footage from the film (shot in 24P) in a DV NTSC project. The effects that I am applying to color correct it Levels and fast color corrector. Any idea why is this happening and what should be done to minimize this?

3. As I said I shot the footage in 24P 16-bit 48Khz. Now when I am impoting the footage in the project (DV NTSC) I am hearing a lot of noise in the footage. When I just play the captured avi file in windows media player its not that noisy.
one more strange thing I noticed when i go to project->settings the audio says it is 32-bit floating(i do not know what that means)..but i created it as 16-bit project?
What am I messing it uo?

Please help me out of this as I am really stuck here and need to get this done for a screening 5 days from now...

thanks and regards

Hi All,
Please let me know if something in not comprehensible here. I will rephrase it...
I can see a lot of people reading this but nobody replying which is why I thought there can be some problem with the post..

you should use one of the 24p project presets, and tweak any settings you want to for editing. if you shot wide screen then use the wide screen preset, and use the normal if you shot 4:3. you HAVE TO capture your tapes using scene detection for any 24p tape materials. so if you didnt do that, go back and recapture using scene detection so the footage will pull down properly to pure 24p for editing and output.

color correction is an artform. theres not much to say here, but you need to just experiment and learn and study what the settings all do and how to use them to achieve the results you want. its also going to pend how clean you shot your footage to begin with. try as one may, you can only push your footage so far in post and its based off the integrity of the initial footage. so basically whatever your doing to correct your footage is pushing/bringing up the noise from your original footage. ..again. its an artform. its not really something that can be stuck in a box of 2+2 =4 to easily give you an answer here. perhaps if you wer to post a still frame of original vs corrected we could summize what may be going on in your case.

your audio settings are set to 32 bit float. this is completely independent of your video bit depth which as you said is set to 16 bit. which is fine, you shouldnt hear the noise on the final output unless your actual audio is that noisy, and any additional noise you are hearing is likely from the on the fly convrsion of your audio bit depth, but anyway, just stick to using the 24p project presets and it should take care of any noise issues your getting for audio. ..again ..unless your actual audio is noisy.

Hey Neil,
Thanks a lot for this reply. I really appreciate ur time and effort to explain me this/

1. well, I already edited yesterday 1 scene in NTSC -DV preset. Is there a way to get that transformed to 24P preset or I have to do that again?
Also i am just wondering if I need to go for a DVD( NTSC) o/p as my final source I am just wondering what will be the difference if I edit it in 24P and then o/p it to DVD -NTSC as oppossed to editing it in NTSC-DV and then o/p it to DVD.

2. you are correct on this. let me post a still from both corrected and original footage then may be you can guide me more. However, I agree with what you said about the original footage quality.

3. I am selected the DV-NTSC preset while creating the PP project and it said that audio was 16-bit. but when i go into the project properties I can see this 32-bit stuff???wondering why would that be??
Anyways, I will try to follow what you have said on the audio and see how it turns out....

-thanks

go into your old project and copy everything in your project bin. then save your old project. then without closing the program open up a new project, and use the correct 24p preset project settings. once your new project is open, clik in the empty project bin, and paste (edit->paste or ctrl+v ) your project files from your old project into your new project, then just double click your sequence in the project bin, and youll get your old edit with the new project settings.

the audio processing is generally good to have done in 32bit float, but the actual depth of the project is whatever you set it at so the projects audio should still be 16bit 48k

you should edit in 24p as a 24p master, and you can output a true 24p DVd if you want as well. youll get better quality for the same bits per sec, and it will automatically add the cadance to standard 29.976 NTSC when DVD players are set up on non progressive TVs. for example, almost all hollywood DVDs are 24p. for film out you would want true 24P as well. theres no really reason to change your 24p material to 29.976 NTSC if your output is DVD or PC because your DVD player will do it for you automatcally if its not set for progressive output, and for web or PC its all progressive capeable so you should leave it 24P. you can always output a seperate 29.976 file if you need it for VHS or something.

so when i get the old sequence in the new project with 24p settings how will the 2:3 pulldown occur to my clips? Do i need to do an interpret footage on all the clips for that sequence? The clips that I pasted to the new project : ain't they still 29.97fps clips? so how to i get the 24fps fotage from these?

if you shot using a 24p mode the pulldown should be applied automatically to the clips when using a 24p project, but again for it to work correctly you would have had to use scene detection when capturing.

ok Neil,
A apologize if I mis-constructed my sentence which lead you to getting it wrong.
Let me put it this way:
I have that old project with NTSC-DV where I edited a scene from the clips which were captured using NTSC-DV capture settings (not 24p project settings) but with scene detection ON though.
Now in the clips that were captured from that settings pulldown was not removed..right.
so if i copy them to the new 24P project will they behave as a 24fps clips or 29.97fps clips?
Do i need to re captured them all? or I can do a interpret footage and things would work for me...

Neil,
I tried yesterday whatever u said..i made a new 24p project and copy everything from the DV-NTSC old project....the clips still showed me a frame rate of 29.97 - the frame rate with which they were captured. now when i applied Interpret footage and changed the frame rate to 23.97 by checking the 'remove pulldown' check box.

But after doing all these I cannot see a discernible change in the project quality..the video and audio quality remain the same..
any idea what must have been wrong with this method.

the clips dont have to be recaptured, but you should re-import them into the new 24p project. then you can just use the replace footage command to replace the current edited instances of the clips in the timeline with the same exact ..but newly imported clips. (just right click on the clip in the timeline of your edit, and select "replace footage-> from bin" and be sure you have the same exact clip ..then one that youve re-imported into a new separate project bin or whatever..highlighted in the project bin)

when you make a new project bin, and re-import all the same 24p shot clips into that bin, they should show up as 24p clips in the bin under the interpret footage dialog. then youll know that the pulldown is working properly, and that your not getting any interlaced frames in your progressive project because of bad footage interpretation. if you click thruogh a fast motion part of the project as is frame by frame, look for any interlacing or frame doubling. re-importing the files and replacing them on the timeline will fix this. when you use the replace footage command all tyour edits and effects ect. will stay intact, so you wil not have to re-edit the project. it will just all be functioning as 24p. then you can delete the originally copied project clips that show up as 29.976 in the bin.

Hi Neil,
sorry I took some time to try that out...actually I am using premiere 2.0 ..and I don't think that it has that replace footage option ...may be i am missing something but i cannot find it..
please advise...

-thanks

hmm. im not sure it if has it either because i cant remember eve needing to use it in 2.0. but you have to have the clip you want to use for replacing the timeline clip selected in the project bin, and then you can right click the clip you want to replace on the timeline, and it shoud show up as an option if PP2.0 has it.

otherwise, you could try only copying the sequence file from the old project into the new one, and importing the files as new files into the 24p project so the interpret as 24p, then see if the sequence will still use the files when yo double click it to open it ..since they are the same files anyway.

theres got to be some way to just get it to recognize the newly interpreted files as the same files. if you dont see "replace footage" as an option, look for something like "link media" or whatever when you right click. or if you can use the "reload footage " from the project bin, to get the project to recognize the old clips as 24p. .. id try these things real quick but im not @ my edit machine.

Hey,
I figured out that way..basically when I made a clip offline and again link media it became 23.976.
In the project panel under the frame rate col. it shows me 23.976fps..this is what i wanted..i am just wondering why it keeps on showing me 29.976fps when i click on the properties option of the file menu..don't know why?//

Ok, now I think I am set for editing in 24p timeline...
now two more quick questions..

1- how do you actually output a 24pDVD. I use Adobe encore I do not see an option there..i can see a output for progressive DVD though..but it does not says how much framerate it would output the DVD to...

2. secondly I shot the movie in 4:3 but I want the final product to be letterboxed...how can i do this and using what..i mean i want those black lines on top and bottom..

thanks
Vivek
