DvRigPro

Re: DvRigPro

I think he is referring to the orange trim on the belt where you place the rod into the little pouch. Speaking of that little pouch, I think that should be a little bigger. I feel like I am stabbing my pelvis bone everytime I use it! I have seen people that carry flags in parades have this little holster thing they wear to rest the flag pole in which is similiar but of course its a lot bigger because of the size of a flag pole.

Re: DvRigPro

Danny, thanks for your interest in my suggestions.

For the belt, maybe an inch or two wider and lightly padded. All black. If the belt is wider you wouldn't need an oval, maybe just a half oval above. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to describe. I could try to make a drawing and post it, but won't have time this week. For the people who want suspenders, you could have nylon hardware sewn to the belt on each side front and back so 1 1/2" nylon webbing could be attached and removed, depending on if the user desired suspenders or not. If the belt is made a little beefier then it should work.

When a spring is compressed, it wants to rebound with the same force it was compressed at ( I think ) and faster than we might desire. Damping is a term that refers to controlling the rebounding of the spring, so you have a smoother ride instead of boing boing. I was working as a bicycle mechanic back in the day when bike shocks were coming on the market. I'm not enough of a tech head to have paid close attention to the design details, but I remember damping was a big issue, and was usually achieved by oil or gas being forced through a small opening. Wish I knew more and could explain it better. Anyway, it seems that there must be a low tech inexpensive way to introduce this to your product, just something to control the return rate of the spring.

I'm 5'6", 135. The average size of a soldier 150 years ago, I'm told.

As for the range of motion, I'm not home to take measurement, but it would nice if the rod could go down a little farther, to bring the camera lower, and could raise just a tad higher. I know that's a lot to ask, but maybe if it had another section that could be achieve.

I'm currently compiling years and years of handheld minidv documentary footage for someone, picking out the best parts so they can be archived. So many good shots are spoiled by sudden jerks and shakiness. Sure wish he had had a DvRigPro.

Adam

Re: DvRigPro

Outstanding! ;D

I measured the rod last night :o
What would be ideal would be to extend the range about 5", so it collapses to at least 3" shorter and extends 2" farther. It actually does extend far enough but the spring disengages before full extention. Someone taller may wish to reverse the numbers. I think adding more than 5" extra of usable travel would prove hard to do, but 4 telescoping aluminum tubes of 8 1/2"-9" each in length might accomplish what I'm suggesting.

Using felt bushings or something similar for the tubes to slide through may make a difference.

Re: DvRigPro

If You need to have your camera in a higher position you may
extend and lock the two lower tubes, and get a support at higher position and still have suspension from the upper spring.

Actually, You get best results, when the pod is locked for the
desired langth and only the upper spring is used as a shock absorber.

Why the lower spring ? With out it, adjusting camera height
would not be so easy. and you may some time use both springs.

Re: DvRigPro

Danny, I'm probably going to buy a DVRP from Rush this week. How do I get the new belt if he still has the old ones?

Go get the rig and I will arrange a new belt for you.

Mail me your adress.

Oh Danny... you may be opening up a can of worms here. I just bought the DVrigPro from DVshop up here in Toronto. I love the rig too but here are my issues:

My right hand hand knuckle gets quite bruised when its gripping the handle at the very top. It rubs against the round disk object. When I'm shooting I don't notice because I'm concentrating on the shot but it hurst after a while.

The handles don't stay tight for too long. They seem to need a little crack once in a while.

The shoulder pad is ok but needs a little more support. I ended up putting a little more stuffing in there.

I wish I was able to slide my own accessories into the track. I can't because the end caps are no removable.

The belt is a little weak in the design department. I feel like I'm in the Incredibles movie. As I am also a photographer, I use the Lowepro accessory belt to carry my lenses. It's a lot more beefier.

These things aside, I rally do love the rig. I use the paglight 6 which has a nice battery pack that fits snug on the back plate. I can't imagine doing any run-and-gun shots without it. Last month I did a few moving car shots out the back of a van. The DVrigPro with the big handles worked well because I was able to shot prop it over the back seat looking out the back window. It's nice to be able to change tapes and make adjustments to the camera without using your hands to hold up the camera. When I first saw this rig online I thought, "another dorky device". I tried the Statis rig and it was bad!So I was naturally skeptical. However, when I tried it at Terrys shop, I was sold on it immediately.

Good work Danny. I look forward to your future inventions.

Re: DvRigPro

Hi Bob,

"hand knuckle gets quite bruised" -
First time I hear this, Hold lower, This is the idea behind the long handles so you can keep your arms lower which is less fatigue on them. If you will use a remote on the right handle, a lower grip will be more natural.

" handles don't stay tight for too long" -
A drop of Super Glue will solve this.

"end caps are no removable" -
Locate the small black screws on the botom of the side bar, unscrew them and push the caps out, If you need more inserts with a 1/4" thread, Like the one at the bottom of the rail, Ask Tery and I will send them.

Anyway thnks for the inputs, You gave the DvRigPro. 8 from 10, This is good enough.

We will "upgrades" list in our site in few weeks.

I agree about the Statis, accept for very nice hings and small folded size, It is an Anton Bauer batery cariage, As a camera
support it does not do much.

Re: DvRigPro

Danny,

What is the Maximum Weight allowed for the DvRigPro? Suppose I wanted to add a 1.6 Teleconverter ~2lbs and a MatteBox to the Rig? This added weight could total up to ~ 8 lbs. Will the Rig support this kind of weight? Also, if I use a MBox with a Rod Support System, will this interfere with the functionality of the DvRP?

Re: DvRigPro

There is no problem with the configuration you described when
using the view finder (Camera close to you) If you will position the camera for LCD veiwing, (Far from you) you will have to add some more back weight.

Re: DvRigPro

Danny, where would you reccommend buying DVRP? Also, do you have any more info. on DVR Junior, yet?

Re: DvRigPro

Call Rush at EVS they have a DVXuser special price on the DvRigPro.

The DvRigJunior is ready to ship, have a look at www.dvtec.tv

Re: DvRigPro

Hello all.

Not new to the list exactly, but I prefer to shut up and listen when I'm lurking around. So much to learn about all this wonderful stuff, and you all are some great teachers. Just back today from a holiday trip to my old stomping grounds of NYC, and picked up a DVRigPro from the guys at B&H. I must say, I'm very impressed -- and not just because I was able to fold it up small enough to put into my luggage for the trip back to the UK -- ;D .

I've only just starting "playing," so nothing much to say yet about how much better my work looks with the rig in use, but, I do have one question about the quick release plate.

I generally use a Bogen 503 head, when on sticks, which uses the Bogen 577 quick release adaptor and plate. I got another 577 for the DVRigPro, assuming that I'd be able to swap out whatever it was using as a quick release adaptor, so that I wouldn't have to change plates during my shoots. The DVRigPro, as I've seen posted on this thread uses a longer plate, which is too wide to fit my 503.

As for the swap -- no dice.

Looks like the quick release adaptor on the DVRigPro has been "spun around" in such a way that the "keying" that the 577 sliding plate does would force me to have to slide the camera in backwards to mount it. Which of course won't work, unless I only want to shoot myself.

Beyond that, it looks like the "L" shaped plate that mounts the adaptor to the DVRigPro forces the adaptor to be machined in this "spun around" position -- it's a hole alignment thing, if what I'm looking at is true.

So, I see that the inventor of the rig has checked into these parts, so I'm wondering if he, or anyone else for that matter, has any ideas, save my going to find a cheap machinist to make me another "L" shaped plate. I'd really rather not spend the money to buy myself a new tripod head, and the 503 adaptor doesn't look like it's interchangable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

Re: DvRigPro

Hi Omar,

Get your self a Manfrotto Quick Release 357 base, screw it on your 577 camera plate (The one you have with your tripod) and you will have the same base on your tripod and on the DvRigPro.

The 577 system camera plate is too short for fast sliding from LCD to View finder position, It can be inserted from one end only, and if you are not carfull with the arrows, It can "fly away" with your camera.

The 357 system is perfect. Both sides insrt, long enough for balancing and changing positions.

Also have a look at the DvRig Acc. page at www.dvtec.tv

I didn't understand the other problem you mentioned, Mail me a photo or a clarification to info@dvtec.tv

Happy new year.

Re: DvRigPro

Danny, Maybe it's just me, but I"m confused. Do you mean to remove the existing base from the 503 head and replace it? If so, I didn't know tripod head bases were interchangeable.

Re: DvRigPro

No.

Any QR assambly has two parts, a base and a camera plate.

The bottom of the 357 base is same as your whatever camera.

Take your whatever brand camera plate and screw it in the standard 1/4" thread at the bottom of the 357 base.

Now slide the two parts to your whatever tripod head.

You now have the matching 357 base, ready to accept the 357 DvRigPro camera plate.

Manfrotto 357 is same as Bogen 3273.

Hope this clears it.

Danny.

Hey Danny,

thanks for the quick reply. Sadly, I don't think this option will work, as the Bogen 503 is a fluid head, as opposed to a tripod mount, so the 577 adaptor is built into it, and secured at 4 corners with hex bolts. The bolts are too far apart to fit the 357 base, and there's no place to screw anything into it. If I were working with a regular tripod head, your solution would probably work tho.

Maybe this will make more sense with a link:
http://db.manfrotto.com/product/templates/itemalone.php3?itemid=755

I'm willing to bet that in the 503 configuration, Bogen calls the 577 something completely different...sigh...

If this doesn't make any sense, I can take some pics and post them to the email you provided. In the meantime, I guess I'm going to have to scour London and Cambridge for a machine shop that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks again,

-Omar

Re: DvRigPro

Doing a little more checking on the Manfrotto (Bogen) site, I would have had to buy a 510, 516, or 316 fluid head in order to use the same plates that are used on the DVRigPro. I picked up the 503 after some positive recommendations here, and I've never looked back, so I'm willing to bet I'm not the only person who'll run into this issue.

Just passing the info along, in case someone goes a-searchin'...

Re: DvRigPro

A beer is easy, except that for some reason, I can't see the images (I'm assuming they're images), that your links point to, even after signing up for the streamload service.

This is what I get:
Access Denied

You cannot access the content "Cummon camera plate.jpg".

Is there some sort of super-secret decoder ring I need or something?

Thanks for lookin' out, tho.
