DVrack question...

So I have a question about using DVrack, what is the difference between using DVrack to capture HVX HD footage and using that new converter tool they just released?

Using DV Rack to capture allows you to do live monitoring, direct-to-disk capture, and use all the wonderful tools (like the waveform monitor and the vectorscope and all that).

Using the converter, you can convert P2 card footage into .AVI files that can be edited in Premiere or Vegas or imported into After Effects.

... but DV Rack 2.0 HD includes the codec and the file converter for free, so if you buy DV Rack 2.0 HD, you have everything you need to be able to edit in Vegas (or Premiere, or pull the files into After Effects or whatever). It won't be six streams of realtime HD like you'd get from FCP or EDIUS, but it'll at least work.

I love my DVrack - think it's an amazing tool and thanks to Barry for the suggestion probably a year ago. It has been solid for me though and through.

Just got an HVX and and upgraded my DVRack to HD....look forward to shooting with it direct to disk!

Unless you really need the portability of a Firestore, tethered to the laptop and DVRack is an elegant solution..IMHO. very humble.

I am also trying DV Rack 2 HD now. But what does make sense when actually I can't capture my footage via DV Rack with all the settings and adjustments I do in it?!? I changed phase, contrast, etc in DV Rack, but then I see that the captured footage is not affected by my settings in DV Rack.
So, how to apply the settings in DV Rack to a captured footage???

You can't. DV Rack captures the signal as the camera images it, you cannot modify the signal in any way.

Changing the monitor is just like changing the controls on your TV set -- it doesn't affect the footage at all, just the way your monitor displays it.

What you should be doing is adjusting the monitor to deliver a true image. Then if you want to make changes to the footage, change the camera settings so that it looks (on the monitor) the way you want it to.

I've had dvrack when it first came out and used it extensively with my DVX without any problems...You just have to make sure your data goes into a separate hard drive vs your system drive. But since I upgraded to the HD 2.0 version the new features makes it hard to not have it. Calibration of your monitor is much easier and there are so many new features that it is like having a whole different program. As for vegas...no problem of it capturing m2t files for editing on the vegas timeline for my canon A1. Now versus the new Canon Console program I tried the demo and found it ok but vs dvrack it was no comparison. Especially due to the lack of features it has vs dvrack and the price is overall cheaper. Granted the console can adjust your camera from the laptop but I would rather be behind my camera and be able to adjust my setting manually there.
