DVRack any good?

Thanks for the info. I'm too lazy to do the math right now and I don't have the manual at hand. I would have thought it was much more of a space hog than that.

I just got a Lacie 500 gig firewire 800 drive, which is 2 250 drives in a raid 0, so I think that should do me for now...

Hey all. Monitoring off camera is one thing that I've never had the luxury of having but after making a couple of things I can see how DAMNED useful it would be - and of course DVRACK does a lot more than just montitor. What I want to know though, is are there external drives that run on Battery? I guess I can hook upto power, but it'd be nice if I didn't have to.

I'm seriously going to look into this DVRACK - but I'd want DVCPROHD support as I will probably be looking at the new HVX200 as my next camera.

External USB2 or firewire drives up to bout 60 MB (2.5 inch form factor) are battery powered. I prefer to use multiple 40 meg drives and swap them between takes. Failure is more limited (drives are imperfect) and one can be copied to a central storage system while the other is ued for taping anmd a third stands as emergency backup. I buy naked drives and separate enclosures to get best price/performance. Assembly is
1: insert drives into enclosure.
2. Connect cable.

Thanks chris. I take it you mean GIG and not MEG? Also do you recommend any sorts of brands or enclosures drives with batteries?

Aaron

Yes, GB of course (my age/history is showing; at least I avoided KB). Given that I use multiples, I tend to buy the momentarily cheapest known brand.

Thanks. Are the "battery" powered ones, just normal ones that you add some battery attachment, or are they combo units that are designed specifically for battery operation?

Aaron

It is the enclosure that makes it battery operated. The ones I use are typically USB2 enclosures that accept IDE 2.5" drives. They come with a USB cable that has two heads at one end. By attaching two connectors to your laptop you assure that there will be enough power for the drives. All power comes from the laptop battery through the USB cable. I can generally use just a single USB connector as my IBM laptops deliver full power to each one, but many laptops do not. The enclosures can also be driven by a small transformer brick, so I assume it would be easy to find some kind of separate battery holder to feed them if you did not want to tap the laptop battery charge.
