DVR software that records editable formats?

I'm in a bit of a pickle: I need to record a daily show off TV on my computer to edit it later - my wife is the show's producer and she needs the clips to use as reference.

problem is I can't find any info on what file format the different PVR software uses. I thought of Vista but they use some sort of proprietory Microsoft format. I need something that records in .avi or .mpg or something so I can dump it into Premiere.

any ideas?

edit: Sorry, thought the question was getting a show off of a home DVR, not a computer. As far as DVR software goes, why bother? Why not just get the original source. I'll leave my response below just in case someone actually does need to reference in the future how to get stuff of a DVR.....

Yep, it's kinda convoluted, but to quote Jamie Kennedy in "Three Kings", "It kinda works.". Think analog. Most DVR's, at least the ones that we've had, have a S-VHS output on the back, along with audio outs as well. Connect those to either a DV camera, or if you have an analog IO connection on your computer. If using a DV camera, just make like A-B recording, and viola, you know what to do from there. If going directly into your computer, use capture now. Otherwise, just get a good copy of the original source, since your wife does work as a producer on the show.

Well, the WinTV PVR cards have a built-in MPEG2 encoder. MythTV and Freevo can do mp4 or some obscure codecs, and I'm sure they support the MPEG2 hardware on PVR cards.

Speaking of DVR's...has anyone ever built one themselves (talking about a standalone box, not via a desktop computer)? I see lots of plans on the internet, but I'm curious as to whether or not it's worth the time and effort. I'm assuming you don't save a whole lot of money on the components to build it, but the main advantage is avoiding the monthly subscription fees. I've been considering this for some time and would be curious to hear other's experiences. Thanks.

MythTV should be perfect for his purposes. You can just record to XVid, which isn't ideal for editing, but will still work just fine.

Or you could buy a standalone PVR that has a DVD Recorder built in. That's what I do when I'm lazy-- I can record to the built-in hard drive and then burn to a DVD to watch in my other rooms.

to quote my wife: The show is 4 hours every day. I need maybe 30 minutes out of every other show but I won't know what I need till later. Because of the layout of the station the only place we can do dubs is in master control and I'd have to fill out a requisition form for each clip to do that. there simply is neither time nor resources to do this.

I'm going with an ATI TV Wonder card of some sort and I'll try to figure it out from there. thanks anyway
