Hi everyone,

I have to create a DVD for someone and they want to have the user be able to have the option to choose either a stereo or 5.0 surround audio playback while watching the film. Can someone please let me know the best way or doing this? I create a menu with the audio options but how do I make it so that the click of, say DTS, sets it properly.....

Thanks!

A properly encoded 5.1 mix in AC-3 should downmix properly to 2.0 stereo and even MONO. Part of the Dolby Digital AC3 specs requires all devices to be able to downmix audio, and you can control the way that downmix happens in the metadata of the encoding.

That being said, there is no reason to allow for the user-selectable mix unless there is an original 2.0 mix that you want to keep for nostalgic purposes (Think Original Star Wars).

Now explaining this to your client could be a difficult thing to do. Do some research and try to show them the difference.
