DVDs: please name a price

OK, I've finished a video project -- very low cost -- and now the woman wants to buy some DVDs. They consist of:

1. My burning the video and DVD SP menus onto blanks.
2. Printing full-color on an Epson inkjet.
3. Spraying them with Krylon.

What's a fair price for 10 of them?

Without knowing all the details I would have to say, based on it being a very low cost project (meaning your client payed very little to have it produced?), that you need to make your money here. I'd go with a very rough ballpark of $20 a DVD, but I could see senarios where you would be justified charging anywhere between $5-$40 a dvd. I guess I need more details to be specific. Alot of videographers film events for free, then charge $30 or more per DVD to sell to the participants or parents.

The deal was, it was my first project. So she was taking a chance, and I was learning. Fortunately, she loves the result. However, I can't burn this bridge -- she's got good connections for me. I'm sort of think $8/each -- pays for disks and ink, as well as some actual handling time. I don't think she'd complain at that price.

I think if she is going to be a good connection for future business I would tell her you can do it for cost on this one, since she was taking a chance, but leave it open enough so that you can charge a fair rate in the future. You don't want to box yourself into $8/DVD for the rest of the work you might do with her.

But what is cost, unless I'm paying myself nothing for my time? At this point, there's no chance involved. I'd think I'm at least entitled to minimum wage for time I can't spend doing anything else.

I guess it really depends on how much time you spend. I did a job once and I did the DVD's for about $150(20 DVD's with labels and cases), but charged $50/hour for the editing and the rest. It just depends on how much of a break you want to cut her, and how much more business she's going to through your way.

If she can get you higher paying jobs then work out a deal with her: Tell her you'll do it at cost if she'll tell everybody where she had it done.

A job I did for free, directed somebody to me who payed me a dollar an hour who directed somebody to me who payed me 20 dollars an hour who directed someone to me who payed 50 dollars an hour.

If they're taking a chance on you, and have the connections and influence to make more happen, cut a deal with her for free advertising. Especially when you're starting, you can't beat the opprotunity to work with people who have connections.

For extra copies of standard projects, I charge as follows:

2 for $60 ($30 each, minimum of 2)
10 for $200 ($20 each)
25 for $400 ($16 each)

This assumes I have all the work done, DVD authored, artwork ready to print n DVD, cover art ready to print, etc. They get a printed DVD (no lables) in a standard DV case with a custom color cover. I think Kinkos charges about $15 each, but do not know if they would be as nice, or just plain DVD with ahndwritten title on it.

No need to be too cheap, or to compete on price with WalMart..

FWIW, I also bribe consumer clients for referrals. Both referrer and referree get an extra copy of their DVD for free.

Sorry, but $8 should illicite a "Nice!" reaction. Your not simply burning them, your going through a manufacturing process. $8 is fine, but you should realize that is very cheap- and let het know that.
