DVDs Mpeg-2 - is 720x480 60i the best you can get starting with 1080 60p?

I have tried various renderings starting off with 1080 /60p footage - all of the approaches issued warnings of compression - until now.

I just managed to do a rendering by picking MPEG-2 720x40 60i and this required that I separately render the audio to generate an AC-3 file at 48,000 Hz, 192 kps.

I then loaded up DVD Architect Pro 6.0, picked the two files and proceeded with the burn.

Is this a good protocol or is there some combination of approaches that will give me an end result of 1080 on the DVD as opposed to 720?

I must say that on my PC I don't find that the 720 DVD quality is any less than that of playing the 1080 .mpg file running in Windows Media Player.

DVD is a standard-def format. You can't put HD on a DVD; you have to downrez it to SD. For an NTSC user that means 720x480, and that can either be at 60i or 24p. That's all a DVD can handle.

If you want 720 or 1080 .mpg it will have to be burned to Blu-ray. Here are the accepted formats.

You did it correctly. This is what the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen template under MPEG-2 is for.

You really do want to do this from Vegas instead of having DVD Architect recompress it.

@Barry, @ Mark @David

Thank you for the information.

@David...
"You really do want to do this from Vegas instead of having DVD Architect recompress it."

I see a Burn option under "Tools" in Vegas 12. Will try that. Will see if I can see a difference compared to rendering in Vegas and then burning from DV Architect, where, it seems I have been doing two compressions.
