I've noticed that many threads on this board about taking footage from a commercial, DRM protected, DVD and importing it into Final Cut Pro get cut short or sidetracked by legal arguments.
I'm a college professor at a public university trying to give my students a complete feature film for them to cut into a trailer. My reading of this recent federal court decision about fair use and DRM is that it is 100% legal for me to break DRM and copy a DVD for this purpose (good summary here: http://gizmodo.com/5596571/federal-judge-ok-to-break-drm-for-fair-use).
So with that out of the way (I feel like some of the best minds on this forum sometimes withhold info on this subject out of legal/political beliefs that I believe are now rendered moot by the recent court finding)...
What is the most up-to-date, high quality, pathway to get footage from a DVD into FCP. I'm looking for a result that is at least 720x___ (depending on aspect ratio) and is crisp, free of artifacting, and has audio that doesn't need to be rendered on the timeline. I've seen some great mashups and recuts on YouTube in HD that look terrific. I'm using an Intel Mac and FCP 7.
I've had more than one person recommend a hardware approach to this issue - but I'd find a software based one much more convenient as my university does not have an AJA box or anything like that.
If anyone has a BluRay pathway, I'd be interested in that as a side note as well.
