Hey all,
can anyone recommend an external DVD writer for my dell Inspiron laptop-gig o ram- to run with Vegas bundle-

and can you recommend a "Clamshell" to use for capture?

also, are there any components I shouold upgrade on my little system-
i have captured with Vegas using DVX100a and whatever is in my computer/laptop, and it came out ok, but will resolution and captured images be better with better capture cards or video cards, or something?
forgive my utter ignorance, and thank you for reading,

Sony, Pioneer, HP -- these will be quality burners. At this point, I'd start looking at dual-layer.

Not sure what this means. What's a "clamshell" as pertains to capture?

No. Capture is a bit-for-bit transfer of the 0s and 1s which are on the tape. The capture card or video card has nothing to do with quality.

I'm looking for a burner too - specifically interested in LightScribe double-density stuff. Has anyone used this LG writer?

I'm not so much into the Lightscribe idea. The media are expensive, and burning an image often takes longer than burning the video -- and I've never been very impressed with the quality besides.

I'd rather burn white printables and use an inkjet.

Lightscribe COULD be useful if you're travelling and you want to burn a one-off and label with something better than a Sharpie -- but for day-to-day use, I don't think it's the way to go.

I have the HP brand internal LightScribe burner and have been extremely happy with it. I assume the external is just as reliable, so there's one recommendation for the HP brand (good prices at www.newegg.com).

Regarding the LightScribe itself. It is a very slow process, a full disc image at best quality takes roughtly 30 minutes. This is not a technology for every disc you make. However, I would argue that it is a great technology for a unique look on specific projects. And the cool thing is you can still burn white-printable disc's if you choose to. By having the LightScribe drive, you have the option and the drive doesn't cost any more than a non-LightScribe drive. Also, it is great for printing a line or two of text, instead of writing with a Sharpie, on CDs or DVDs. I find that a line or two of text only takes a couple minutes.

Hope this info is helpful.

Peace,
Larry

Forget to clarify Clamshell-Sorry!

I am referring to any "clamshell" shaped MINI DV deck/player so i dont wear out the DVX100a-

any suggestions on what has worked best for each of you.

Thanks in advance-
