DVD to MPG1 conversion without loss?

I have an old project I worked on with some friends in DVD format. I want to cut out the stuff I did for a reel (I'm going to chop it up in Vegas).

I tried using a tool called "1Click DVD to Mpeg Mpg" to convert the DVD to an MPG1 file, but the resulting MPG has lost some quality. I've tried adjusting some of the settings in 1Click, but there aren't too many options.

The final output will be back to DVD so I'd like to maintain the quality -- can anyone recommend a better way to do this?

You want MPEG-2. MPEG-1 is low-quality and suitable for a video CD only.

If you're using Vegas, don't do any of that. Just explore the root of the DVD and copy out the *.VOB files. Drop those on the timeline. Vegas can edit DVD .VOB's directly, no loss in quality (until you go to recompress, of course).
