DVD to FCP nightmare...

I'm using DVD footage i imported using Streamclip. I brought it in at 23.98 (to match footage i shot) and the compressor says h264. From what i can tell my sequence and clips match. the problem is that i get an unwanted freeze-frame at the beginning of each clip in the timeline. sometimes it's even a frame of something from a different clip or a different part of the master clip. also, my render times are crazy slow and the FCP 'quits unexpectadly' quite often now. any help, greatly appreciated.

While I never recommend ripping a video from a DVD for editing, it seems like it was your only option.

You need to get the footage into native DV format, whether that is converting it through Quicktime/FCP or just using the native footage.

H.264 is not a format you edit with, it's what you finish with.

If you need more help let me know.

Yeah, no h.264 as it's a long GOP format, which compresses over multiple frames. You want an I frame format which only compresses singles frames, like DV NTSC, or Uncompressed 8-Bit.

HUGE THANKS! got it working now. but this leads to a few other questions: i get lots of export options from streamclip and i'm not sure about how high to set the "quality level." the default is 50%. next, am i better off with DV or Uncomp 8-bit? i'm mixing this footage with footage shot on Canon HDV, so i'm assuming there is something specific i should use. Should it be the Apple HDV setting from Streamclip? Lastly (for this email anyway) what are your thoughts on the deinterlace option?

thxx again,
sg

I'm shooting some footage on HDV which i want to mix with some footage pulled from a DVD. when it's done, i'll burn it to a dvd, with a total running time of 5-7 mins. (the footage on the dvd was shot on many different formats, as it is a demo reel for a stuntman and the footage was pulled from 20 different projects for his dvd). i'm not concerned about matching the look of the footage, just looking for the easiest setup to work with while i'm cutting it together.

Well you can just use a normal DV setting and mix all your footage together that way, since you are going to output to a DVD when it's all said and done.

You're using Final Cut 6 right?

yes, using fcp-6. what about the other settings? 1) deinterlace? 2) turn quality up to 100%, or leave at 50% ? 3) any other settings i should be concerned about when exporting from Streamclip? thxx.

When exporting it from Streamclip, try to get the highest possible export you can get, so basically have it at 100% quality and such. Make sure to convert it to an editable format like mentioned before.

De-interlace isn't needed unless the footage needs it.

another problem. I'm importing my DVD footage via Streamclip setting it to 100% quality and using the Quicktime DV/DVCpro setting. the frame rate is 23.98 and the frame size is 1920x1080 hdtv. it imports nicely to my browser and plays great. but when i drop it into a sequence it always needs rendering. the sequence/clip settings seem to match... what am i missing here? thxx.

when i import the footage now, it requires rendering when i drop it into the timeline. sequence/clip settings seem to match. thoughts?

I've got a MacPro Quad 2.66. 4gig Ram, 500g HD for video. Studio-2. I tried importing again form Streamclip and this time I used 1080p24 which seems to work better. no need to render this time.

sadly, my new problem is that FCP only recognizes my HV-20 sporadically. (used for digitizing only) . not sure what the deal is there.

That's strange, the HV-20 is an HDV camcorder, it should just work.

What exactly happens when you plug in the camcorder into FCP?

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. it seems like i have to plug in the six-pin first, the four pin, next, then turn on hv-20, then open Log/Capture. i've noticed others on dvxuser having similar problem.

Plug-In the camcorder first, have it powered on, then launch Final Cut Pro.

Or, if Final Cut is already open, try refreshing A/V devices (apple-F12)
