I'm trying to Rip a dvd i made a couple years ago, due to hardrive failure, it is the only surviving piece of a fantastic memory.

Using DVD to AVI, it gives me a whole slew of options for codecs and i haven't the foggiest which one is best, quality wise and what differentiates them. I would love it if someone could give me some opinions on the following codecs and which i should use to recapture these memories.

options available:

1) Cinepak codek by Radius
2) Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
3) Intel Indeo (R) Video 4.5
4) Intel IYUV codec
5) Microsoft Video 1
6) Indeo (R) video 5.10
7) XviD MPEG-4 Codec
8) ffdshow Video Codec
9) DivX 5.0.5 Codec
10) Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec

Thanks

If you are using Mac, just download free software named HandBrake and you can rip any dvd to avi. Very easy to use.

Have never tried anything like that, but something that complex can't be bad, thank you for that phantom, i will let you know how it works out.

I haven't received an answer from phantom as to how to do the Demultiplex option with DVD decrypter, so can i ask someone to please shed some light on the situation and wakl me through how to achieve this? I only get vob, iso and another type of file, no M2V or anything.

Basically you'll just need something to rip the stuff off the DVD first. So you can use DVD shrink or DVDFabHD decrypter....I'll just guide you with the DVDFab one here in about 8 steps....

1) download and install DVDFabDecrypter

http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm <--- that is the link, you wanna download the first link the HD decrypter NOT the Free DVD one.

2)insert your dvd and then click the little folder by the Target section at the top to select where your ripped files will go to.

3) Click Start and it will rip the files to that folder. Easy.

Next you will have some Video TS and Audio TS folders which containt the video files. VOB files are essentially MPEG files, so all you have to do is change the extension from '.vob' to '.mpg'

(to rename or change extentions you may have to go to 'Tools' > 'Folder Options' > View tab > then UNCHECK the box for 'Hide extentions for known file types' Then all you have to do is highlight the VOB file and press F2 to rename. It may prompt you that if you do this and it can recognize the file may become unusable...it will be fine. ignore and hit yes or ok. Then later you can always recheck that box to hide extentions for known file types)

4) Those mpg's should open in windows media player or any DVD playing application you have. IF you DON'T have a player or can't afford one, there is a free one online @ http://www.avsmedia.com/DVDPlayer/index.aspx

I use that one and works well.

5) anyway now you know what files you want to reedit, so you take those '.mpg's and import them into Virtual Dub. http://www.virtualdub.org/

download that and you can't actually install it you just extract it to a folder and double click the little icon that looks like a gear wtih some film strips to launch the application.

6) Once Virtual Dub is open , click File > Open video file

7) Then click on Audio and select full processing mode, instead of source audio.

8) Finally select Save as AVI.... from the File menu and then once its finished processing you will have an AVI that will be able to be reedited with no problems and no loss of quality.

hope this helps!!

hey reflex, i think i have tried this version in the passed, but the problem was that since it was shot on 24p. convereted to 29.### it somehow turned it into an avi with lots of motion blur between frames. Not very attractive.

i could be wrong so ill give your versio na try,

any idea on how to demultiplex though? Still trying to give that way a try, i just dont see an option with my DVD decrypter

but should that matter? Because as I understand it you shoot 24p but it gets sent to tape with the 2:3 pulldown so its ACTUALLY 29.97 on tape and then on to DVD,

unless you shot 24pA or you shot 24p and then removed the pulldown and went to DVD like that in that case it would be 23.976.

When you rip the vob's and make then mpgs the frame rates don't change... and in virtual dub the default is ' no change ' under frame rate.... so that shouldn't change anything either...

anyone else seeing something I'm not? I'm pretty sure if the frame rate had changed... its becuase the program you were using was set to change it. It shouldn't this way.

:)

no the frame rate doesn't change, but what is introduced is a wild motion blur between each frame. making it look like 1/24th shutter.
