DVD Studio Pro questions?

Hey everybody,

- When I export my project to DVD Studio Pro and put it on dvd, I see vertical stripes in the footage when I play it on the DVD player. Anybody knows how to make the footage more smooth? Is it a compression thing maybe?

- How can I make a still image of the menu in DVD Studio Pro, because I'd like to use it on the DVD cover?

I hope someone can help me with these questions. Thanks in advance!

Don't know the vertical stripes thing off by hand, so can you give more details as to what your setup is...

What format is the footage shot in?
What format is the footage edited/output in?
What setting did you use in compressor?

As for making a still image, I guess just do a print screen. I say this under the assumption that you're using one of DVD Studio Pro's templates. If you're using something else then you should be able to load that background movie into FCP or Quicktime or whatever and just do an export still that way.

cheers.

Hey Varicam,

Format is dv- squeeze 16:9
Footage is edited in 16:9 anamorphic
Settings in compressor is DVD best quality 150 minutes

Thanks for the help all ready mate

Cheers Niels

Oh right forgot to ask, can you elaborate on the vertical stripes playback problem. When you say watching on the DVD player, what DVD player? On your macintosh DVD player or a stand alone unit? Additionally, have you tested it out on more than one DVD player? At the end of the day, something you burn yourself onto a DVD-R only has a certain measure of 'unverisal' playback. So you need to test on at least a few different DVD players to ensure its a disc problem and not a player problem.

The vertical stripe thing doesn't sound like an incompatible DVD player issue, but thought I'd throw that out there too.

cheers.

I see it when I watch it on a stand alone unit. The stripes are not really obvious but still noticeable. Maybe it is part of the quality of dv footage?

hmm I think in 25p, but now I checked the camera and I made a last shot yesterday (shot of wedding card, 3 weeks after the actual wedding) and I see that I have it now in 50i.

Well, I have no idea abou the software you are using there, but I would think you might want to verify that the framerate matches for your footage/project settings/dvd output, etc.
I don't know why that might cause stripes, but it often seems to be the source of picture problems on output to dvd.

I don't think so BenB. Maybe if I give my settings, someone will notice something that gcould be better:

DVD Studio Pro:
- Encoding MPEG-2 SD
- Aspect Ratio: 16:9
- Field Order: auto
- Mode One pass VBR
- Bitrate 4.0: Mbps
- Max Bit rate: 7.0 Mbps
- Motion Estimation: Better

Sequence settings in FCP:
- Render all YUV material in high- precision YUV
- Motion Filtering Qality: best
- Field Dominance: Lower (even)
- Quality 100%

I think I filmed it in 25p, but maybe 50i, so maybe that makes the differents. Any help would be very welkom.

Cheers

Yep, shooting progressive, I'd do my DVD as progressive (field dominace set to none).
I'd also make these changes to the settings (I never use any preset "as is"). Change Mode to Two Pass VBR, Motion Estimation to Best, and I'd never leave field order on auto if I'm bringing in progressive footage. Well, I'd never leave it set to auto anytime. Set it to lower or none.

If the original footage was shot progressive, what was the Sequence you exported set to?

Ah thank you very much BenB... I checked it again and I had the compressor settings still on interlaced and 4:3, so that probably was the problem. I changed the settings to what you have, now I have to export it again (bummer, that's like more then 3 hours for 1,5 hour footage) and get it in DVD Studio Pro with the new settings. I hope then it is good. Thanks a lot.
