DVD Studio Pro: 480i v. 480p

Footage shot with HVX200, outputted from FCP 5.1.2 as Quicktime Movie file; dumped into Compressor under DVD Best Quality 90 mins, 16x9. After a long encoding process, the MPEG-2 file and AC3 files are ready to be dumped into DVD Studio Pro for final authoring. Set the Track, Chapter marks, etc. When you click on Track 1, there's a sort of "get info" area in the inspector which indicates that the resolution of the asset is 720x480i.

Why isn't it "480p"? Is there any way to effectuate this? Something I'm missing?

I read in Barry's hvx book that 720-480 format is technically an interlaced format regardless if you shoot the video in progressive, but i'm not sure if this carries over to dvds too. Maybe see if you can ask Barry.

NTSC (and PAL) video is always interlaced. You can embed a progressive signal into an interlaced stream, such as the DVX does in 25p and 30p modes.

DVD is an exception though, you can author a DVD at actual 24P data rates with no interlacing anywhere. If you play that DVD on a progressive DVD player, hooked up to a progressive TV, you'll get true 24P progressive imagery on your TV.

(and if it's going to a CRT, the DVD player will convert it on the fly back into the appropriate interlaced signal).

Does that mean when authoring 24p onto dvd, that you don't need to apply the pulldown from 23.9x -->29.9x ?

Thanks,
Jason

That's correct. 24p DVDs do not have pulldown in the video file. If you watch it on a standard (interlaced) TV, the DVD player will add the pulldown.

Any DVD player ever sold can do this.
