DVd skips using DVD arch 4b

The last DVD I did used 4.2 gb of space and 2 of the videos stalled badly. I now have another DVD I just did using 3.8GB of space and 2 of the videos skip or hang..I remember a few years ago someone else had this problem but can't remember the solution.
If I remove a video and bring the usage space down to say 3 gb it works fine.
I'm guess DVD Arch 4b has issues with trying to burn a full 4GB DVD.

My guess is bad media. How long were the videos and what was the average bit rate used?
I've used DVDA since it's inception and never had any problems but I stick with brand name media.
I now use Taiyo-Yuden Watershield but used to use Verbatim.

The amount of data on the DVD won't impact playback, but the data rate will. What was your encoding bit rate? If you go over 8mb/s you could potentially start running into problems by bogging down the player. This isn't usually as big a deal as it used to be when computers were slower. Also, what audio format are you using? .aiff/wav takes up a lot of space with little added fidelity so you're better off using the dolby .ac3 for your audio.
The next things to check if your bit rate and audio are good are the disc media, the recorder, and the player. Any of those can cause playback issues. Change up the player and see if it still skips. Then change the brand of DVD-R you're using. Then change the recorder. You should figure out the problem through elimination that way.

I Use Vegas 7 for editing and Render using the MPG setting then render.AC3 for DVD Arch.
The first dvd I tried using on my Sony DVD player with the stalled play. My computer DVD player, same and then over to a buds, same result.
My media I have been using for about 6 years with the odd use of Sony DVD's have worked fine.
The 4.2 and 3.8 gig seems to be the issue as when I reduce the size it plays great.
Since Vegas does the rendering automatically I have no idea what the settings Vegas uses.
I could try the custom setting for rendering a MPG then reduce the Bit rate if that will work.

When you say "Vegas does the rendering automatically", are you using one of the default templates? If so, which one?
The fact that your problem goes away when you use a lower file size means that you're changing the average bitrate and knowing which template you're using will help us to help you.
FYI, my rule of thumb is to use a CBR (Constant Bit Rate) of 8,000,000 for anything under 70 min. long.
More than that and I use a VBR (Variable Bit Rate) and the bitrate calculator found at http://www.johncline.com/bitcalc110.zip to help me determine the optimum render settings.

A note on CBR (Constant Bit Rate) vs VBR (Variable Bit Rate). CBR sets the data rate and hits that no matter if the image needs it or not, or even if it needs more. Variable takes a look at the images and sets the bit rate according to what it thinks is needed right there while hitting the average target bit rate that you set over the course of the whole video. Generally you'll get better results with VBR, but since I'm not familiar with your encoder I can't say that categorically. Also to complicate things more, some encoders will let the bit rate spike on really complicated scenes which can cause less powerful players to choke and skip on playback.

To the OP, it sounds like when you lower the total target for the data that the encoder is lowering the bit rate and that's allowing your DVD to play back without skipping. If that's the case, then problem solved!

You may have just had a weird render or burn. It happens.
