dvd recording question....

hi all...

Does it matter how a dvd is recorded?

I use my DVR to record my movie from PPRO.... then, take the disk and duplicate it. The final disk won't play on some dvd players.... (using sony 4.7 +R dvd disks)

I'm using a speed setting on the DVR called HSP, which is a little faster and better than regular SP speed.

Is recording a movie at SP a mandatory setting? Or does is not matter what speed it is recorded?

Thanks,
Darryl

It could be something as simple as some of those players not liking the Sony media, but if not:

By DVR to you mean something like a Tivo or do you mean one of those stand-alone DVD recorders?

If it's a stand-alone DVD recorder, are you outputting an analog signal from PPRO to the unit?

Without more details, my first guess is that disks recorded in a stand-alone DVD recorder are generally most compatible for playback in the unit they were recorded in. I would recommend getting a DVD-R drive for your computer ($50 - $60) and authoring and burning your DVDs with that. I think you will find increased compatibility. (if you are duplicating the disc it sounds like you might already HAVE a DVD-R drive...)

Clarification on what exactly the DVR is and why it's being used will help.

HI...

I'm using a stand alone sony digital video disk recorder.

I go from the computer to the camera then right into the sony recorder. It makes great analog copies.

Then, I take the disk, pop it into my computer sony burner and make copies from there.

You say I should use the -R dvds to copy to instead of +R ?

Can I copy a +R dvd and then record to a -R dvd?
or does it all have to be the same?

also, does the DVR recording speed have anything to do with playback? Does the dvd player read dvd's all the same regardless of how the data is recorded on them?

Thanks for your time... I hope this helps others.

I've given up on any type of authoring. I've got a 2.5 hour movie and have no luck authoring with any compatibility. Plus the hours wasted making attempts.... I just use the DVR on (1) 8.5 GB disk or (2) 4.7 dvds.

Thanks for your help!

No I'm not saying anything about minus or plus R media. I should have typed "DVD +/- R" because I don't think that is your issue.

It is possible that the DVD player you are using for playback would pefer "-R" or a different brand of media altogether and is worth a shot.

Tell me this: Is it only the copy that does not play in other DVD players or does the ORIGINAL DVD (from the DVD recorder) give you issues as well?

HI
I'm only sending out copies made from my computer burner.
Some play and others start to digitize a bit. (crap out)
The data verifies fine, and the dvds play in my 2 home dvd players. But everybody has a different player and there seems to be so many variables.

It's so frustrating sending the movie to festivals and half of them say it won't play.

Are you burning at high speeds? I would recommend trying a 1x burn from your computer.

What model is the standalone DVD recorder? Do you go from Computer -> Hard drive in the recorder -> DVD+R? I have seen some models that burn at very high speeds (as high as 24x). I think that if you master that fast it can cause problems, so if you can slow things down to at LEAST half the rated speed of your media it will probably help.

To answer your earlier question, you CAN master to DVD+R and make your copies to DVD-R. I don't know if that will help compatibility for your eventual viewers, but it is another possible fix.

I'm sorry I'm throwin out so many possibilities... but hopefully things can be narrowed down eventually!

thanks Owen, I'm going to get some -R dvds and burn slower....
I can't adjust the master speed from the sony DVR... but when I make copies, I'll go 1X w/-R dvd and see if it helps.
Thanks again,
Darryl
